Review of Week 24:
SEEK: Take the proper steps and kingdom life opens up before you.
REST: The solution for unrest is “coming to Jesus”.
STAY: Stay with Christ and you will be transformed.
FOLLOW: Will we give up our natural affinities to follow the Master?
ABIDE: Abiding leads to transformation, obedience of thoughts, and correct thoughts.
CHARACTER: It takes diligence to build good character.
LAY DOWN YOUR LIFE: Save your life and lose it. Lose your life and save it. You must choose.

June 17 - JUDGE NOT
Matt.7:1-5 "...Do not judge so that you will not be judged. "For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye...”
Jesus had one word He used in reference to judging another - NOT (quite contemporary don’t you think)
What does a judge do? [passes final sentence, either clearing or convicting.]
Who is the judge?
Hebrews 12:23 “...to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,...”
2 Timothy 4:1 “...I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom...”
What happens when we judge? [we come under the same judgment.]
What is criticism? Is it the same as conviction? [NO] Does criticism come naturally for Christians? For you?
What’s the difference between a play-by-play announcer and a participant in the game?
Which is easier, criticizing from the booth or playing the game? [The Holy Spirit comes alongside. He doesn’t criticize from the booth.]
If the Holy Spirit would work through you on behalf of another, how do you think He would do it? [By coming alongside.]
Explain the speck and plank from Matt.7:3
What does Matt.7:5 say?
- We are expected to help our brother.
- God doesn’t say do nothing. He says get fixed, then come alongside one another.
  • Just don’t do what? JUDGE NOT

June 18 - LOOK TO JESUS
Matt 14:29-30 “...And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!..."
What were the conditions before Peter walked on the water toward Jesus?
- Matt.14:24 “...But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary...”
Why did Peter ask Jesus to command Him to come on the water?
- Peter saw His Lord involved in activity that was beyond the natural.
- He wanted to be involved if His Lord wanted it so.
Did Jesus want Peter involved in activity beyond the natural? Does Jesus want you involved in activity beyond the natural?
What changed that caused Peter to sink?
- It wasn’t circumstances. They were rough to begin with, and continued to be rough as Peter walked on the water with Jesus.
- It was focus that changed.
What causes the life giving word to be choked out of a believer (from parable of sower)?
- cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches.
God’s Word comes to us in all circumstances. We can’t wait until things calm down to act on His Word. We can’t lose focus when circumstances don’t get better as we act on His Word.
Jesus bids us to come unto Him.
Let your actual circumstances be what they may, but keep recognizing Jesus, maintaining complete reliance on Him.

June 19 - TEND
John 21:16 “...He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep..."
What are sheep like? [Dumb. Vulnerable. Prone to going astray. Helpless.]
Which sheep does a shepherd care for? [All that are his, especially the one that is the most prone to going astray.]
Jesus tied Peter’s love for Him to the service of caring for His people.
Can a sheep decide to be a shepherd?
If a sheep tried to be a shepherd, would the flock be safe?
What, from this section in John, qualifies one to be a shepherd?
- LOVING Jesus.
- HEEDING His call.
- CARING for people.
What does it mean to substitute doctrinal belief for personal belief? [devotion narrowed to creeds and causes, which falls short of devotion to Christ.]
Why does devotion to the cause of humanity lead to exhaustion and faltering love?
If we love Christ and are passionately devoted to Him, we will get beyond self and tend to God’s business, no matter how we’re treated.

June 20 - OTHERS
Job 42:10 “...The Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased all that Job had twofold...”
Others, Lord, yes others. Let this my motto be. Help me to live for others, that I might live like Thee.
When did Job’s blessing come? [When he prayed for his friends]
Why did Job pray for his friends? [God told him to pray for them]
When does your blessing come? [It’s not because of what you know, but what you do]
What should you be doing?
- Whatever God tells you to do.
- Self interests pervert the will of the Father.
- We can’t bargain with God.
- We must submit to His authority, to His means of salvation, to the circumstances ordained for us, and to the call to pray for others.
The one small step for man, the one giant step for mankind, isn’t a step on the moon, it’s the step from self-centered to others-centered.
Where is our focus today?

June 21 - PROCLAIM
1 Pet.2:9 ”...But you are a chosen race, A royal priesthood, A holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;...”
Context:
1 Peter 2:6,7 “...For this is contained in Scripture: "Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed." This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "The stone which the builders rejected, This became the very corner stone,..."
1 Peter 2:8 “...and, "A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed...”
Who is Peter talking about here? [Paul was addressing the pilgrims of the dispersion, born again people, Christians living in Asia Minor who were suffering rejection in the world because of their obedience to Christ.]
Are you a part of the royal priesthood, His own special people?
Why does God have chosen race, a royal priesthood? [to proclaim His excellencies]
How does self evaluation and introspection create a self-centered morbid type of Christianity? How can it be avoided?
Do we spend more time discussing and evaluating darkness than we spend living in His marvelous light?
If we have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light, we will be proclaiming His excellencies!

June 22 - MERCY
Matt. 7:2 "...For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you...”
Are we the creators of the world within which we live?
If I don’t think I’m in control, but the future rests on my shoulders, what will my future look like?
If I think and act like I’m in control, but I’m not, how will the one in control respond?
If I never ask these kinds of questions, and never find answers - does it matter?
Highlights of the life of King Nebuchadnezzar from the book of Daniel.
Daniel 1:2 “...The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand...”
Daniel 4:22 “...it is you, O king; for you have become great and grown strong, and your majesty has become great and reached to the sky and your dominion to the end of the earth...”
Daniel 4:25 “...that you be driven away from mankind and your dwelling place be with the beasts of the field, and you be given grass to eat like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven; and seven periods of time will pass over you, until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes...”
Daniel 4:28 “...All this happened to Nebuchadnezzar the king...”
Daniel 4:34 “...But at the end of that period, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever; For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom endures from generation to generation...”
The Lord gave Nebuchadnezzar power, and he became great, but failed to acknowledge his position under God. Circumstances changed until he finally accepted the fact the God’s kingdom endures forever.
If Matt.7:2 is true, does ignorance of the truth make it any less true? Does ignorance of any of God’s truth make it less true?
What do you need, what do you want, when you come before God, carrying all the baggage of your sin and shortcomings? [Mercy and Grace]
What do your fellow humans need? [Mercy and Grace]
What do you extend to people?
What will God extend to you, according to Matt.7:2? [What you extend to others]

June 23 - SIN
Isa.53:3 “...He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him...”
One of the first books I read as a new Christian was Peace with God by Billy Graham.
I recall that he had a list of things that people through time have used to try to find peace and contentment. And all of them fail.
I was reminded of the book by O.C. saying men try to control instincts and educate themselves into the life of God.
Why are our good intentions doomed to fail?
- we always run into a wild, irrational problem.
- we must face the problem of SIN.
- sin doesn’t submit to our good intentions. It doesn’t listen to our logic.
- sin is “red-handed mutiny against God”.
How can we escape the corruption that is in the world?
- 2 Peter 1:4 “...For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust...”
- His precious and magnificent promises lead to partaking of the divine nature.
Can we think our way clear of sin?
- It can’t be managed, and Jesus knew it.
- Galatians 2:20 ”...I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me...”
- Galatians 5:24 “...Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires...”
- It must be crucified.
What was the instruction to the lukewarm Laodicean church in Revelation.
- Rev. 3:15-16 “...'I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. 'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth...”
- Rev 3:19 “...'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent...”
Why did Jesus come?
- To reconcile man to God.
- To pay the price for sin.
- To make a way for Peace with God.
- He was despised and rejected ...a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Sin cause grief.
- Jesus was intimate with the grief.
Don’t be casual about sin! Jesus faced it. We must readily repent and allow the cleansing to occur. This is the purpose of God in our lives for which Jesus came.

Review of Week 23:
KNOW: The fear of the Lord is the starting place. Intimacy leads to shared secrets.
ASSURANCE: We can be sure that God will be true.
UNAFRAID: When we present ourselves to God, we go out with boldness.
WORK OUT: We must work out the salvation that God is freely offering to us. Our will must be directed by His Spirit.
ABIDE: Where we live affects how we live. If we are one with the Father and the Son, we will do greater works and glorify the Father.
SET SAIL: Doing involves risk, but we were built for it.
ASK: Ask for the kingdom to come and for that which is necessary to serve others.

June 10 - SEEK
Luke 11:9 "...So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you...”
Are you a seeker? What do you seek? Is there anything left to be found? How serious are you about seeking it?
Is there a difference between seeking things from life and seeking from God? [My kingdom vs. ‘Thy Kingdom Come’]
Is it possible to find what you’re seeking and have the wrong thing? Is it possible to buy the wrong field - no treasure in it?
Is it possible to become satisfied with your present experience and want nothing more from God? Not truly satisfied, but complacent and somewhat deceived?
How does one find a deeper life? James 4:7-10 “...Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you...”
Submit to God and Resist the devil.
- Draw near to God. [come up to the door]
- Cleanse [get your hands off the wrong things]
- Purify. [get your heart changed]
- Mourn and weep. [get rid of self pity and recognize your true need]
- Humble yourselves. [assume the proper position before God]
After doing all of the above, you can knock and the door will be opened to you.

June 11 - REST
Matt. 11:28 "...Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest...”
WHAT is the rest that Jesus is talking about? What is the opposite of rest?
- It’s not activity.
- It’s not being on your feet instead of in your easy chair.
- It’s UNREST
What causes UNREST in your life? [Sin, Circumstances, Worry, Relationships, etc.]
WHO needs the rest Jesus is talking about?
- All who are weary and heavy-laden.
- All who have Unrest in their lives.
HOW do person miss the rest Jesus is talking about?
Heb.3:7-11 ”...Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, "Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, And saw My works for forty years. "Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart, And they did not know My ways'; As I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.' ..."
- hearts must be soft.
- can’t provoke and test God.
- hearts can’t stray.
- must know God’s ways.
HOW can people avoid missing the rest Jesus is talking about?
Hebrews 3:12-14 “...Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,...”
- be careful with your heart.
- encourage each other daily.
- don’t be deceived and hardened by sin.
- hold on to the blessed assurance.
WHY is “come to Me” so critical?
- leave the confusion of “do this” and “do that”.
- experience the abiding oneness.
- change of perspective.
- rest.
What is required to “come to Me”?
- surrender.
- laying down personal agendas.
Is “come to Me” a one time event?
Do we make a habit of coming?
Do we have rest, or unrest in our lives?

June 12 - STAY
John 1:38-39 “...And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour...”
Curiosity can bring a person close to Jesus, but eventually the challenges of following Jesus will decrease the number of followers.
How does self-interest prevent abiding? [to abide, a person must lay down their self-interest and embrace God’s interests.]
How does abiding result in a new name? [there’s always an identity change as a person is transformed by Christ]
How does leaving early (not abiding) affect a person’s identity? [spotty, inconsistent transformation. Areas of self interest, pride, and self-sufficiency remain untouched]
Luke 18:9-14 “...And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. "The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: 'God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 'I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' "But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' "I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted..."
- What is the problem with the Pharisee in this parable? [pride, self praise]
- What was different about the tax collector? [recognition of sin]
- What did both need? [more than a little time with the Living God]
Rom.12:2 ”...And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect...”
- How much of your pride, self-sufficiency, and self-interest has been transformed to abiding? 25%? 50%? 75%?
- If you think you’re above 50%, do you have spiritual pride.
- If you think you’re below 50% do you want something more than you want God?
Is the transforming power of God working on ALL of your life?
Following Christ involves more than just checking out where He’s staying.

June 13 - FOLLOW
Luke 18:22 “...When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me..." (Scripture in 1992 My Utmost version)
Mark 1:17 ”...And Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men..." (Scripture in 1963 My Utmost version)
How did the rich young man respond to the invitation of Jesus? [he went away grieving Matt.19:22]
How did the disciples respond [immediately they left their nets and followed Him]
What prevented the rich young man from following? [his will to continue his life by his preferences]
What caused the disciples to follow? [their will to embrace something beyond themselves]
Is there anything that prevents us from following?
If we surrender our will to God, what does He do?
John 7:37-39 “...Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.' " But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified...”
More than just thirst quenching. Holy Spirit life flows from within.
Is our life stagnant, or creatively fresh?
Did Jesus make the disciples fishers of men?
Three years after the disciples had left their nets to follow Jesus, they were back with their nets, fishing. Why? Their natural affinities took them back there.
Becoming what Jesus intends to make us doesn’t happen instantly.
We must not retreat into our natural affinities. We must give up our rights to ourselves.

June 14 - ABIDE
John 15:4 “...Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me...”
We’ve talked about our conscience being the right/wrong meter that exists in our Spirit.
Do we have a like/dislike meter that we refer to as we face the circumstances of each day? [our feelings and thought processes exist in our Soul]
Is it appropriate to try to manage the circumstances of our lives to line up with our likes?
Is it more appropriate to line up our thoughts and attitudes with the Living Christ?
Scriptures regarding thinking, thoughts, and mind.
Romans 12:2 “...And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect...” Is this one time, or ongoing?
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 “...for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,...” Is this one time, or ongoing?
Philippians 4:8 “...Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things...” Is this one time, or ongoing?
Does God the Father want you to think a certain way? Did He demonstrate it through Jesus? Does He force it on you?
What is a bandbox? [a slight paper box for bands, caps, bonnets, muffs, or other light articles -- a hat box]
What does O.C. mean when he says this is not a bandbox life? [A compartmentalized life, with the way I think dependent on which box I have opened. Church - act and think one way. Work, School, Home, Alone, With strangers - another?]
Do we require certain circumstances to be present to abide in Jesus?
Are there circumstances that take us out of abiding?
How can a person abide with God throughout all aspects of life?
- we must be transformed by the renewal of our minds.
- we must take every thought captive to obey Christ.
- we must think on true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, good things.

June 15 - CHARACTER
2 Pet.1:5-7 “...Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love...”
Context: We’re back to Peter again. Adding to our faith so we’re not useless and unfruitful. Becoming partakers of the divine nature.
Thoughts become action. Actions become habits. Habits become lifestyles. Lifestyles become destiny.
Are all your habits good?
Can you and will you change any of your habits?
- Make sure your thoughts are obedient to Christ.
- Act on these thoughts.
- Good habits will follow.
Why should we be diligent instead of casual?
- There is obvious corruption in the world
- We should seek diligently to partake of the divine nature
Are we born with character?
How is character developed? What is your part in the process? [Thoughts - actions - habits - lifestyle (character)]
Describe what a person of high character looks like? [2 Pet. List]
How does God use circumstances to help your character development?
Do you think we ever get to the point where there’s nothing left to add?

June 16 - LAY DOWN YOUR LIFE
John 15:12-15 “...This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. "You are My friends if you do what I command you. "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you...”
What is the difference between dying and laying down one’s life?
- To die for someone is a heroic event.
- To lay down one’s life for someone is an ongoing event.
- Jesus did both.
Does Jesus ask you to die for your friends?
Does Jesus ask you to lay down your life for another?
Is it natural to lay down our lives for others?
- it’s contrary to fallen human nature.
- it’s normal if our character development has proceeded all the way to agape.
Why is laying down one’s life the greatest display of agape?
- self is not as important as others.
Parallel Gospel Scriptures about saving/losing your life:
Mt 16:25 “...For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it...”
Mk 8:35 “...For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it...”
Lk 9:24 “...For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it...”
If our arms are full of self, they aren’t available for others. It’s only when we lay self down that we are free to use our arms for others.
Does this automatically occur when a person has a salvation experience with Jesus?
O.C. claims that God in effect says ‘Now work it out, be loyal to me, while the nature of things around you would make you disloyal’

Review of Week 22:
EMPOWERED: Obey. One accord. Christ glorified. Power from on high to accomplish what Jesus said was written and necessary?
PURPOSE: The resurrection Life of Jesus answers questions we didn’t even know how to ask. His life in us accomplishes what following Him doesn’t, what talking with each other about His words won’t.
ACCESS or ACTION: Access to God is provided in none other than Jesus Christ. When the redemptive work of Christ is accomplished in our lives, when we are one with Him, we go beyond access to action to accomplish the Father’s purposes.
BUTS: Following Jesus does not allow ‘Yes buts’. Faith moves us beyond the place where common sense prevents progress.
FIRST: God, who needs nothing, has chosen to need you. Trust Him and put His will and His Son first.
GOD KNOWS: We must take comfort in the fact that God Knows. We must be willing to work with Him in every situation.
FEAR: Who is teachable in God’s ways? Who will end up working WITH Him? “...the man who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose...” (Psa.25:12). In fact, the secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him.

June 3 - KNOW - Posture to Please.
Psalms 25:12-14 “...Who is the man who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land. The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant...”
Does God know everything about you?
Does God know anything you don’t? How can you learn His secrets?
Proverbs 1:5 “...A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,...”
Proverbs 1:7 “...The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction...”
Why is ‘The fear of the Lord’ the starting point? [God created us and the time/space dimension in which we live. He is the truth. If we don’t have an awe for Him, a healthy fear and reverence, we don’t assume the posture for Him to share with us.]
What is intimacy? In - to - me - He - sees
How do people get to the point of knowing what another person is thinking, without saying a word? [time, sharing]
Do Christians know more about God’s likes or dislikes? [abomination list is easier to create than pleasure list]
Isaiah 42:21 “...The Lord was pleased for His righteousness' sake To make the law great and glorious...”
Isaiah 66:2 “...For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being," declares the Lord. "But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word...”
Matthew 3:17 “...and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased..." [baptism]
Matthew 17:5 “...While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!..." [transfiguration]
Matthew 25:21 “...His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master...” [parable of Talents]
1 Corinthians 1:21 “...For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe...”
Hebrews 13:16 “...And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased...”

June 4 - ASSURANCE - God is close and He cares.
Heb.13:5 ”...He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,"
Oswald uses this PORTION of scripture as a means to assure the people of God.
- we need assurance in both good times and bad times.
- Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine, Oh what a foretaste, of glory divine.
Is this assurance about position (closeness of God) and/or relationship (care of God)?
- do our feelings give us an accurate measure of our position and relationship?
How can God be close to and care for billions of people?
Old Testament references:
Deut.31:6 “...Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you..."
- Moses explaining to the Israelites how they were going to enter the promised land.
- Any danger of God failing them or forsaking them? [they did the forsaking]
Josh.1:5 “...No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you...”
- God assuring Joshua, who was to lead the Israelites into the land.
- Any danger of God failing Joshua?
To what is God calling us? Will He fail us?
- Take possession of your souls.
- Go ye therefore.
- Even greater things.
But we need to read the whole passage:
Heb.13:5,6 ”...Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you," so that we confidently say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?..."
What does the first part add to our understanding?
- what is the love of money, and how does it affect our assurance?
- how do misdirected loyalties affect life outcomes?
-13:1-4 also instructs to love the brethren, show hospitality to strangers, remember prisoners, honor marriage and keep the marriage bed undefiled.
Do we have a part in Blessed Assurance?
Is ‘I will never leave you’ a promise or a threat?

June 5 - UNAFRAID - Perfect agape casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
Heb.13:5,6 ”...He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you," so that we confidently say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?..."
Which is worse, worry or fear? Do they have the same effect in a person’s life?
- focus on a potential or probable bad result?
- erosion of hope?
Psalms 56:11 “...In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?...”
Psalms 118:6 “...The Lord is for me; I will not fear; What can man do to me?...”
When do you need courage? [when the world and circumstances press in - always]
What difference does it make to remind yourself that the Lord is your helper?
How can knowing God’s word give you boldness? [2 Pet.1:4 devotional - the great and precious promises allow us to escape the corruption in the world and partake of the divine nature]
2 Timothy 2:15 ”...Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth...”
We can’t use the word to support our agendas. We can live boldly because of His revelation to us.

June 6 - WORK OUT - Salvation isn’t owned, it’s worked out.
Phil.2:12,13 ”...So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure...”
Body: senses / Soul: emotion, intellect, will / Spirit: conscience
What is conscience? [Right/wrong meter. Co-perception]
What is will? [What you want]
What does one’s life look like when their will is directed by the body? [yielding to the basest, animal like life - addictions. I want to see it, touch it, taste it]
What does one’s life look like when their will is directed by the soul? [if it feels good, or if it’s common sense, it must be okay - carnality]
What does one’s life look like when their will is directed by the spirit? [a good, clean conscience leads to cooperation with God’s expectations and intentions]
From where does unhealthy worry and fear come? [body or soul led life]
From where does healthy fear come? [Spirit led life]
Why do we have to ‘work out’ what God ‘works in’?
O.C. says sin is a perverse disposition which entered into man. It works against the Father’s will. It also works against your will!
Romans 7:14-15 “...For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate...”
Not ownership, but action.
Choices, choices, choices! Choose God. Choose His way. Choose His truth. Choose His life
Stubbornness is a solid wall of resistance to allowing God to direct our will. How can it be eliminated? [dunamis - Holy Ghost dynamite]

June 7 - ABIDE - Live with Him and you ARE God’s will.
John 14:12-16 “...Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. "Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;..”
How is our will affected by where we live? [cultural pressures]
How is our will affected by living with someone? [more aware of them and their preferences]
What does it mean to abide in Christ? [to reside with Him, to live with Him]
What is the core meaning of this scripture?
- not that we can obtain whatever we selfishly desire!
- when we believe in Jesus, and become one with God and His intentions, we become instruments that speak His will into existence and bring Him glory.
- we are the will of God.
What does it mean to fritter money away? Why does it happen?
- It’s gone, and nothing of substance was obtained.
- No discipline. No perspective. No working toward a larger goal.
- Conscience and Will overridden by body and/or soul.
How can a spiritual life be frittered away?
- Gone, and nothing of substance in return.
- No discipline. No perspective. No working toward a larger goal.
- Conscience and Will overridden by body and/or soul.
What is the driving influence of our lives? What is the center that ultimately affects everything else?

June 8 - SET SAIL - Pull up your anchor.
John 13:17 ”...If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them...”
Context: Jesus washed the disciples feet, giving them an example, ‘that you should do as I have done to you! A servant is not greater than his master.
Do we KNOW more than we DO?
Is doing like going out to sea, and not doing like staying docked in the harbor?
Does a boat in the harbor cease to be a boat? [It just doesn’t accomplish that for which it was built]
What good are Christians who don’t do what they know? Do they cease to be Christians? [They just doesn’t accomplish that for which they were built]
When does the blessing come? [Not with the knowing, but with the doing]
Are we built for the sea or the harbor?
- the harbor is a place to prepare for the sea.
- the harbor is a place for repairs.
- a boat is built for the sea.
Have we been to sea and found it a place of worry and fear?
Have we refused the call to sail? What happens when we don’t answer the call?
- we set up an alternative value system revolving around our current port.
What are the risks of obedience? [loss of control, events, and destination]

June 9 - ASK - Ask for what is needed to serve others.
Luke 11:10 ”...For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened...”
O.C. Says ‘The Holy Spirit is the One who makes real for you all that Jesus did for you.’ What do you think this means? Has all that Jesus accomplished on your behalf been made real in your life? What role does asking have in the process?
When this scripture is taken out of context, how does it get used?
- I want something, I ask, I get.
What is the context?
- Jesus says ‘so I say to you, ask’, which is a “therefore” kind of statement.
- We should always find out what a therefore is there for.
Prior to the “so I say to you”
- He described how to pray ‘Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’
- He told of one with a need, going to his friend and asking for help.
What kind of need? [He needed to serve another]
We are to be asking for the kingdom to come, and for that which is necessary to serve others.
Does God want you to have what you want? [sometimes]
Will God give you something you’ll regret? [quail in wilderness]
Why does O.C. Insist that we must ask from our poverty, that we must beg?
- The Holy Spirit must guide us to the truth of our need.
- We must embrace that truth.
- We must ask, and we will receive.
