Review of Week 29:
OBLIGATED: Like Paul, we should feel obligated to Christ for every soul and responsible to live our life for others.
CONTROL: We should keep our minds filled with the notion of God’s control behind everything.
POWER OF GOD: Our faith should not rest on man’s wisdom, but on the power of God.
MIRACULOUS: Our out-of-focus focus is quickly refocused by the miraculous.
OBEDIENCE: Our level of obedience is a direct reflection of our level of maturity.
WAIT: We get what we need by waiting on the Lord.
KINGDOM BLESSINGS: The blessings of the Kingdom aren’t found by everyone.

July 22 - DEATH
1 Thess.4:3-8 “.. For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you...”
What does sanctification mean, and how does it affect you?
Webster definitions: 1. To cleanse, purify, or make holy. 2. To set apart. 3. To purify, to prepare for divine service. 4. To separate. 5. To cleanse from corruption.
When does the process of sanctification start? [the moment a person is born again]
What does the process of sanctification require? [death of self]
Why is sanctification a “battle royal”?
- we want what we want.
- we’re accustomed to what we are.
- the demands of Jesus insist upon the death of our old identity and focus.
Consider a poorly managed restaurant: Dingy run down building. Lazy, discourteous servers. Food from the cheapest sources, prepared in a dirty, fly filled kitchen.
When new management takes over, what needs to happen? [The things that were previously identified as being the restaurant, have to go]
Luke 9:23,24 “...If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it....”
The death side of sanctification means something has to go. Is there a part of us that tugs with resentment against the demands of Christ. [It’s a good day to die to self]

July 23 - LIFE
1 Cor.1:30 “...But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption...”
Closing the restaurant to tear down the old building isn’t all there is to the story. Removing all the poor buying policies, and inappropriate behavior is only the death side. What’s the life side? [infusing with that which is right and appropriate].
What follows the death side of sanctification? What replaces the old self? [infusion of the life of Jesus]
What does the life of Jesus look like? 1 Cor.13:4-8 “...Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails;...”
Can a person imitate the life of Jesus?
- people attempt to imitate holy living.
- people have very little success being consistent or persistent in these endeavors.
What is the difference between imitation and impartation?
- imitation is trying to act the part.
- impartation is the actual manifestation of the life of Jesus in mortal flesh.
What is our part? What is God’s part?
The absolute best copy is still a copy.
The world needs the real thing.

July 24 - RIGHTEOUS
Mat.5:20 “...For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven...”
The scribes and Pharisees were the best in the current world at doing righteousness. These were the people who devoted their lives to the writings from God. They took seriously what was written. They worked hard at being righteous.
Why isn’t the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees enough?
There are a large variety of religious systems, each with people attempting to live righteously. What does this scripture say to them? [if their righteousness doesn’t exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, they will by no means enter the Kingdom of Heaven]
How does one attain to a righteousness that exceeds the scribes and the Pharisees?
- Sanctifying death of self.
- Sanctifying impartation of life of Jesus Christ.
What is altered in the death and rebirth process?
- old self DNA is replaced with God’s DNA
How does regeneration differ from education?
- New makeup, new motives.
- Not retraining of flesh, but rather death and replacement
Can our DNA lead to right living, right motives, right dreams? Will our DNA lead to a purity which leaves nothing for God to censure.
Can Jesus Christ put into a person His own disposition - his DNA?
The purity which God demands is impossible, unless we can be remade within.

July 25 - BLESSED
Mat.5:3-10 “...Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...”
The beatitudes are the opening salvo of the Sermon on the Mount.
Makarios - blessed - special joy and satisfaction.
How do the beatitudes compare to the ten commandments given in Exodus?
- Not a set of rules and regulations.
- More a state of being than goals.
Are the beatitudes consistent with “The American Dream”?
Does self effort lead to these blessings?
- the Holy Spirit takes us where self will not go.
- God blesses in unnatural ways in situations we wouldn’t naturally choose.
In the everyday life we live, in our normal routine, do we have special joys and satisfaction? Is this way of being, not doing, appearing in our lives more and more?
Is this DNA of the kingdom becoming who we are?
Are these commands that we must do?
Are we expected to be immediately and perfectly transformed into this state?
Does the Holy Spirit gradually work this into us as He has His way with us?
The blessings of God aren’t something we work to possess. They are poured out as we are poured out for Him.

July 26 - PURITY
Mat.15:19 “...For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders...”
What is the difference between ignorance and innocence?
- ignorance: clueless.
- innocence: blameless.
Which best describes the human condition?
How does ignorance promote a false sense of purity?
How does the devil exploit this? [deception keeps us from repentance]
Have we ever been shocked by evil coming out of another person’s heart? Out of ours?
Do we know our own heart? Is there evil and wrong in our hearts?
If you live in the south or the inner city, but haven’t seen a roach in your kitchen, does it mean you don’t have roaches? If your neighbors have never seen a roach in your kitchen, does it mean you don’t have roaches?
If you read the Bible every morning, pray, go to church, Sunday School, small group, listen to Christian Radio and train your kids to do the same thing, does it mean you’re pure?
Minimizing the opportunity for sin to express itself isn’t a bad thing, but it may deceive us into thinking our house is clean, when in fact we may have some huge roaches.
How can we identify and remove our roaches?
- we need to get beyond doing and appearing clean, to being clean.
- the master exterminator needs to have access to the whole house.
- the Holy Spirit was sent to convict of sin and lead into all truth.
- John 16:8 “...And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;...“
- John 16:13 "...But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come...”
- our cleansing follows our repentance.
- 1 John 1:9 “...If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness...”
-“...confess our sins ...”
The Sermon on the Mount is a challenge to trade walking by the flesh for walking by the Spirit.
When is this necessary? [every minute of every day]

July 27 - IN THE KNOW
John 7:17 “...If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself...”
What does it mean to be ‘in the know’?
Who knows...
What’s going on in technology today? [those that are interested in technology make it a point to know what’s going on]
What’s going on in the stock market today? [those that are interested in the market make it a point to know what’s going on]
What’s going on in Washington D.C.? [those that are interested in politics make it a point to know what’s going on]
What’s going on in their families? [those that are interested in their families make it a point to know what’s going on]
What’s going on in their church? [those that are interested in the church make it a point to know what’s going on]
Do we know what’s going on in our schools? Our community? Our church? Our denomination?
Do we know what’s going on in the kingdom?
For most things, intellectual curiosity and/or emotional commitment can lead us to being ‘in the know’. O.C. says that’s not the case with spiritual things.
2 Timothy 3:7 “...always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth...”
2 Timothy 2:25 “...perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,...”
Why were the educated and committed Pharisees unable to find their way into the truth that Jesus was living, teaching, and offering?
According to O.C., what is the Golden rule for being ‘in the know’ spiritually? [Obedience. Obedience leads to understanding]
Why doesn’t it work the other way?
What happens if I must understand before I obey?
- I’m not under authority
- I’m in control
- I live in my world, by my terms.
- I can’t get the bigger perspective.
- I’m Lord of my life.

July 28 - PURPOSE
Mark 6:45 “...Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away...”
What occurred prior to Jesus saying this? [The feeding of the 5000]
What occurred after He said this? [In the fourth watch (3-6am) He saw them straining at rowing and v.48 came walking on the water and would have passed them by.]
John 6:15 “...So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone...”
What occurred prior to this? [The feeding of the 5000]
What occurred after this? [They saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat.]
Is it possible that we also want to take Jesus by force and make Him King? [People, it seems, have always wanted a king to suit them]
If He had allowed Himself to be made King, what would His kingship have looked like? What did the people want?
If He would allow us to make Him king, what would His kingship look like? What do people want?
We’ve determined from the previous devotion that to be ‘in the know’ spiritually is to obey. Obedience comes first.
If Christ gets your ear, gives you instructions, and you obey, what then?
- A typical discussion with someone about why they should follow Jesus is characterized by what they’ll gain.
- you can avoid hell and gain heaven.
- you can live victoriously.
- you can prosper.
- The real reason for following Jesus is to live out His purposes.
- you might end up in a boat, in a storm, in the fourth watch.
- you might find yourself straining.
We don’t obey because we’ll get what we want. We obey because He is Lord of the Universe.
We don’t obey because we see the end. We obey because He’s our Lord today, storm or no storm.
Christ still walks on the storms of life. Will we focus on the chaos and not see Him walking? Will He pass us by?

Review of Week 28
WILL: Our conscience and our will are our friends. It’s our desires that need transforming.
SERVE: It is absolutely critical that we allow God to do something in and through us.
WORK: What’s your reaction when faced with the challenges of life? Retreat and retire or Face and Embrace? We need to encourage each other toward love and good deeds.
KNOW HIM: If Christ isn’t in our public life, it’s likely that we don’t know Him, but rather know a little about Him.
BODY: “...the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body...”
BEYOND WOE: Falling walls. See Him. Woe is me. Cleansing. Usable
RIGHTS: It is the nature of eros to preserve rights. It is the nature of agape to lay down rights.

July 15 - OBLIGATED
Rom.1:14 ”...I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish...”
What does it mean to owe someone?
What’s the relationship between freedom and debt?
- increasing debt leads to decreasing freedom.
- Prov. 22:7 “...the borrower becomes the lender's slave...”
What is the responsible thing to do when in debt? [focus on repayment]
Are we debtors spiritually? Have we paid our way? Can we pay our way?
What do we owe to Jesus Christ? [our very life]
Can we repay the debt? What is the responsible thing to do?
John 14:15 “...If you love Me, you will keep My commandments...”
John 14:12 “...Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father...”
For whom did Jesus live and die? For whom should we live and die?
Paul felt indebted to Christ for every soul, and felt he had a responsibility to live his life for others. Was he being extreme? Was he being responsible?
Did he grasp a truth that we haven’t got a good handle on yet?
Are we our brother’s keeper? Who is our neighbor?

July 16 - CONTROL
Matt 7:11 ”...If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!...”
Is God in control of everything?
Does God know how to give GOOD things to those who ask?
What difference should these notions make when facing circumstances?
- God is all powerful and all loving. If He loves me, why worry?
When does God seem to be an unkind friend?
- When He doesn’t meet our preferences.
Is He unkind?
What keeps us from being perfect givers of good things?
- Don’t have control over all things.
- Don’t have endless resources.
- Don’t always know what’s best.
- Are very needy ourselves.
Does God have any of these problems?
Can we trust Him? Do we trust Him?
Can you think of something that God has forgotten?
Will there ever be darkness in our lives? Has God lost control? [we can trust Him]
Will there ever be unjust things in our lives? Has God lost control? [we can trust Him]
It really is a simple IF/THEN statement. IF God has control of all, THEN nothing can function outside His control.
Why do we worry?
- We don’t understand He controls all.
- We want to control all, and aren’t willing to give up the reins.
- When people want what people want, they never can be free
We need to get the control issue resolved. We need better relationships with God. We need to ask.

July 17 - POWER OF GOD
1 Cor. 2:4 “...and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,...”
Was Paul incapable of using persuasive words? Was he uneducated?
- God has used some very uneducated people to effectively preach the good news. Paul wasn’t one of them.
- Paul could have succeeded in building a mega church.
- Paul could have been a successful television evangelist.
Do you like to listen to persuasive words?
Why was Paul against persuasive words? What is the danger of persuasive words?
- human wisdom can be impressive, but it falls far short of God’s truth.
- 1 Cor. 2:5 “...so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God...”
What are the alternatives to persuasive words of wisdom?
- non-persuasive words (of absolutely no value).
- truth demonstrated by the Spirit with the power of God (of great value).
Preachers and teachers can do so much good.
Preachers and teachers can do a great deal of harm.
- it doesn’t take much to distort or even destroy the truth.
- the less you see a preacher or teacher, the better they’re working.

July 18 - MIRACULOUS
Acts 9:5 “...And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" And He said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting,...”
Context:
- The response of an intensely religious, extremely strong willed man, when spoken to by Jesus Christ: “Who are you Lord”
- Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee, dedicated to making sure things were done properly, was blinded by the truth, and forever changed.
Did Jesus use persuasive words of human wisdom to convert Saul or did he use demonstration of the Spirit and of power?
Why do we gravitate to persuasive words of human wisdom?
- They’re what we know. They’re what we own.
- They’re what we can control, and we like to be in control.
Why is it “not necessarily sinful to disobey”? [Without the mystery and miracle, without getting through to the higher authority, the Holy God, all the obedience / disobedience questions are merely man judging man by man’s human wisdom]
- Obedience is not necessarily obedience
- Disobedience is not necessarily disobedience.
How can we have out-of-focus focus?
- So intent on what we think we see that we can’t see what God wants us to see.
- We’re on a mission, like Saul of Tarsus.
In Num.22:28-31 Balaam had out-of-focus focus. He didn’t even seem surprised at the donkey talking. Then the Lord opened his eyes
What do we need for our out-of-focus focus problem?
- To be blinded by truth.
- To have the miracle working God apprehend us and send us on His mission.
We need to be knocked off our high horse, as Saul was, while we’re on what we mistakenly think is His great mission.
Lord speak - empower us to obey

July 19 - OBEDIENCE
John 13:13 ”...You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am...”
Do you call Jesus teacher and Lord?
Do you know the context in which Jesus said these words to His disciples? He had just washed the disciples feet, then sat down and asked/said to them:
v12 “...Do you know what I have done to you?...”
v15 “...I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you...”
v.17 “...If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them...”
When we use the phrase ‘Lord it over’ what do we mean?
Taskmasters, tyrants, and despots insist on obedience.
Is Jesus this kind of Lord?
How much freedom do you have to submit to or reject His Lordship?
Can we spit in His face? Did people literally do that to Him?
Have we ever done it?
Accepting His Lordship doesn’t lead to ‘lording over’, it leads to willing service.
How is the level of our obedience a reflection of our growth as Christians?
That which is unworthy refuses to bow down. To know Him little is to serve Him little.
That which is worthy recognizes His Lordship and willingly bows down. To know Him well is to serve Him well.

July 20 - WAIT
Is. 40:31 ”...Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary...”
Mount Up (soaring)
- Rising above. Perhaps as in ‘rising above our problems.’
- How does an eagle rise up?
- Some effort to rise, but soaring is making good use of the updrafts.
- Would it get the same result trying to soar when the updraft isn’t there, or when there’s a down draft?
- Is it worth waiting for the right conditions?
- Do people ever try to soar when the conditions aren’t right?
- What’s the inappropriate way to soar? [I want to soar. I know I need the wind of the Spirit. I can make it happen]
- What’s the appropriate way? [Wait upon the Lord]
Run (not tired)
- How can this happen? [Training. Supernaturally]
- When an athlete comes to a track meet, is it the first time he’s run? Why does training require discipline?
- Does this athlete take off running every time he hears a gun go off? [No, he waits for his race. If he took off at every gun, would he be tired running his race?]
- Have we grown tired running the race? Are we patient enough to wait? Do we know when we’re supposed to run? Have we had any false starts?
Walk (not weary)
- How glamorous is walking?
- In our lifetime, will we do more soaring, running, or walking?
- Do people ask how’s your soar? How’s your run? How’s your walk?
- Our walk with the Lord is the expression of our character.
- Can we carry on the everyday reality of our life without fainting?
- How does waiting on the Lord affect our walk?
Are we conscious of God’s presence when soaring? [It’s thrilling to sense the uplift of the Spirit]
Are we conscious of God’s presence when running? [When well trained, having waited for the starter’s gun, we run without wearying]
Are we conscious of God’s presence when walking? [When we walk with the reality of His presence, we will not fear]
Gain new strength
What really happens when we wait on the Lord? [Some translations say renew strength, some say gain new strength]
Do we need strength?

July 21 - KINGDOM BLESSINGS
Matt. 5:3 "...Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven...”
Context: The first words Jesus spoke when he sat down to explain the counter-culture, to teach the be-attitudes, to explain how life was to be lived before God.
The blessing of the kingdom of heaven is for the poor in spirit.
What do you think it means to be poor in spirit?
Blessed (mak-ar-ee-oss) is a word that expresses special joys and satisfaction granted to a person.
The special joy and satisfaction of the kingdom of heaven is found by:
5:3 the poor in spirit
5:10 those persecuted for righteousness sake
5:19 whoever does and teaches even the least of the commandments
5:20 the truly righteous
7:21 he who does the will of the Father
This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it certainly says a lot.
When you look at this list, do you see yourself?
The problem in this journey is that a standard is erected that we can’t attain. We’re told:
- To be pure in heart
- To do more than our duty
- To be perfectly devoted to God
What are the possible reactions to this standard?
- Turn away discouraged.
- Minimize additional input so I can feel better about where I stand.
- Fall at the feet of Jesus as a pauper - poor in Spirit.
The gate is narrow. Jesus is the gate. Only He can make me what He teaches I should be.
If you’re intending to follow Jesus into truth and life - pack light.
If we come with a lot of baggage - preconceived ideas of how it should be, treasures that we insist must go with us, we’ll find it difficult to follow.
Can Jesus put into us the same disposition that ruled, and rules, His life?

Review of Week 27
PRISON: Right relationship with God and man is freedom from the prison where most of humanity is chained.
DISCIPLE: A disciple is ready and willing to follow, regardless of previous plans, possessions, or preferences.
EXPOSED: God’s intentions for our lives requires direct attention to our specific sin.
FRET NOT: Walk by faith, not by sight. He can be trusted at all times, in all circumstances.
PLAN: We need to commit to planning with God.
BATTERED: God is always working toward His good intentions, even when it feels like we're taking a beating.
NARROW: Following Christ is not for cowards. He takes us off the well trodden wide way and offers a narrow gate, which leads to life. Few find it.

July 8 - WILL
Josh.24:15 “...If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord..."
How many choices do you think you make each day?
Which choices are easy?
Which choices are difficult?
Do you like having lots of choices?
What is the basis for your choices?
- personal preference (ice cream flavor).
- personal image (clothes, car).
- personal pleasure (recreation, etc.).
How does God factor into your choices?
What are the differences between serving self, serving others, and serving God?
What does it mean to ‘will to obey’? [subjugate personal preference, and others’ preferences, to God’s preferences]
Is this natural? [not for corrupt nature, which is flesh driven]
How is it an act of the will to be Spirit led?
Is free will a risk factor in our walk with God?
What is the difference between will and desire?
Do we sometimes have to use our will against our desires?
We can desire something, have a clear conscience which alerts us to what is right, and exercise our will to prevent our desire from taking us where we should not go.
Our conscience is our friend.
Our will is our friend.
It’s our desires that need some transformation.
Did Jesus exercise His will to do the Father’s will at Gethsemane?
How important is it that we exercise our will?
Can our desires be changed to the point that our will doesn’t have to be used against them?
How active is your will?
How dangerous are your desires?
If we don’t exercise our will, are we likely to go through the narrow gate or the wide gate?
Choose for yourselves today who you will serve!

July 9 - SERVE
Josh. 24:19 “...Then Joshua said to the people, "You will not be able to serve the Lord, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgression or your sins...”
Context: Joshua says choose this day whom you will serve. The people say they won’t serve any other. Joshua says ‘you cannot serve the Lord!’. The people say ‘No, but we will’
What’s going on?
Josh. 24:23 “...Now therefore, put away the foreign gods which are in your midst, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel..."
Joshua knows that you can’t serve multiple gods, that you must get rid of foreign gods.
Can you serve the Lord? Do you serve the Lord?
What is the difference between impulsive service and deliberate commitment?
- Impulse depends on feeling a certain way at a certain time. Set the stage just right and people can motivate people to serve.
- Commitment doesn’t depend on feelings. The stage can be all wrong, but a committed person will still serve.
What does it mean to serve the Lord? Do we live to do His bidding?
Are we capable of serving the Lord?
- not in our own strength and understanding.
- not as initiators and stage setters.
- only as followers.
Can God use us? Will God use us?
How can competence actually make it more difficult to serve the Lord?
- reliance on self overrides reliance on God.
- initiating replaces following.
Remember the disciples confidence that they would follow, that they would serve.
Did they? Did they with their own strength?
Did they need Jesus to lead them?
Did they need the Holy Spirit to fill them?
It is absolutely critical that we allow God to do something in and through us.

July 10 - WORK
Heb.10:24-25 “...and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near...”
1. What is a sluggard? [A person habitually lazy, idle and inactive]
What is the goal of a sluggard? [To have nothing to do].
Do you know any sluggards?
What does it take to move a sluggard to action? [Prodding - a mother nagging, a friend calling, a boss giving an ultimatum]
2. What is a spiritual sluggard? [A person whose spiritual life is lazy, idle and inactive].
What is the goal of a spiritual sluggard? [To have no responsibilities spiritually]
Do you know any spiritual sluggards?
What does it take to move a spiritual sluggard to action? [Prodding - stirring, spurring, provoking]
Can you be a spiritual sluggard even if you aren’t otherwise a sluggard? How can active work counterfeit spiritual activity?
How should meeting together help prevent spiritual sluggishness?
- we encourage one another.
- we stir, we provoke.
- we get enthused to face tomorrow
3. What is retirement? [discontinuance of something previously done with regularity]
Why do people retire?
- don’t like work anymore.
- can’t do work anymore.
- want something different.
Is there injustice, meanness, ingratitude, and turmoil in this world?
Is there something you’d rather do than face these things day after day? Would you like to retire from it all?
What is the alternative to retirement?
- continuing on with love and good deeds.
- face and embrace.
Can you see how the will vs. desire problem and the multiple god problem requires us to gather together to prod each other out of spiritual sluggishness.

July 11 - KNOW HIM
Phil.3:10 “...that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;...”
Context: Phil.3:7-11 “...But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead...”
How many of you know about Billy Graham? How many of you know Billy Graham?
What’s the difference between know about and know? [information vs. relationship]
Was Paul interested in knowing about Christ?
There are two radically different approaches to life alluded to here.
My life - self realization
- I’ll gather information.
- I’ll find what works for me.
- I’ll plan my life for what seems appropriate, what feels good and right.
- I may even decide to do something noble - I feel good when people praise me.
Christ’s life - knowing Him
- I live because of the breath of the creator.
- All of life is to be released into His creative and redemptive purposes.
- Following Him isn’t a search for feeling good.
What is the reason for our school system? [to teach]
Why is teaching necessary? [can’t function well without knowing]
Who started public education in America? What was their focus?
- The first public school in America was established by Puritan settlers in 1635.
- The religious and moral education of youth was paramount in early American schools. The first book in the classroom was the Bible
What is the focus of our public education now?
- Self realization.
- What is missing from our school system, and public life, now? [knowing God]
- How has that been working for us?
How can we ‘know Him’ in every situation?
- not by taking Him out of our public life.
      - constant confession and profession.
July 12 - BODY
Ephesians 4:11-16 “...And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love...”
What are your goals in life? What are God’s goals for you? Do they agree?
Why do you come to Sunday School? Why do you want to learn? What’s the goal?
What was accomplished by Christ?
- payment for sin at Calvary.
- liberation of people trapped in less than God intended for them.
- teaching on Kingdom Living.
What is expected of us? [all of these, including laying down our lives for others].
How does developing an individual spiritual life, or enjoying spiritual retirement miss the mark? How does developing and maintaining a church organization miss the mark?
- It’s not about self. It’s not about self realization. It isn’t about you as an individual.
- It’s about the body. Its about finding our place. Its about being put in our place.
- The proper working of each individual part causes the growth of the body.
Preach the Kingdom and the Body of Christ becomes healthy and grows.
Preach self-realization or church growth, and the Body of Christ is weakened.
What does Paul’s “that I might know Him” lead to?
- Knowing what He’s doing.
- Reconciling the human race to the Father.
- Restoring the intentions of God.
Do we have any interest in this? Any part in it?
What happens if we don’t take our place?
What happens if part of your physical body doesn’t do its part? [The whole body suffers]
He certainly builds us as individuals, but His intention is to build us corporately.
If we’re usable, we’ll be built together.

July 13 - BEYOND WOE
Is.6:1 “...In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple...”
This is the beginning of the passage we talked about when Isaiah stood in the presence of God and said “Woe is me, for I am undone!” And God touched what needed touching to cleanse Isaiah for service.
The sequence - Someone dies, woe is me, cleansing, send me
Have you seen everything there is to see?
What prevents you from seeing something new? [habitually looking at the same things]
What does it mean “to see along the line of my prejudices only”?
- expectations determine our view.
- we expect to see what we’ve seen before.
- we tend to reject anything that is inconsistent with our adopted normals.
If our great wall of prejudice has blinded us to things beyond our small domain, what must occur before we can move into God’s bigger Kingdom? [removal of the wall]
What does wall removal feel like? [not good]
- loss of people that are a normal part of our life.
- loss of things that are a normal part of our life.
- loss of ideas that are a normal part of our life.
O.C. says God removes our friends in order to bring Himself in their place.
- Do you think He would do that?
- Does that mean God won’t let us have good friends?
Do you think there’s more spiritual growth at a funeral or a festival? Which is more fun? Which is more valuable?
Do you think there’s more spiritual growth in a class that agrees with your adopted beliefs, or a class that challenges your adopted beliefs?
If mourning turns to fainting, falling, and getting discouraged, we’re missing an opportunity.
When people want what people want they never can be free.
Prejudices that can’t take the shaking must fall.
The formation of God’s life and character in us allows us to see Him.
See Him. Woe is me. Cleansing. Usable.
Accomplish in us Lord, that which you intend.
We’ll embrace the woe to get to the commissioning.

July 14 - RIGHTS
Matt. 5:38-48 “...You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye , and a tooth for a tooth .' "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. "If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. "Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. "For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? "If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect...”
Are these difficult concepts for us? Is it natural to strike back when struck? Is it natural to defend yourself against slander and misrepresentation?
What does the world think of someone who doesn’t strike back? [coward, patsy]
Did Jesus strike back or defend Himself? Was Jesus cowardly?
Does Jesus expect us to endure insult and actual harm to our person or property?
Why are “rights” so important in this world?
- we’re a selfish people.
- we think more highly of ourselves than others.
- we live in eros.
1 Cor. 6:7 “...Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?...”
Why is it wrong to insist on our rights? Why is it right to ‘rather be wronged’?
- it’s agape.
- it’s the nature of the God.
Micah 6:8 “...He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?...”
Can ‘flesh’ do what Jesus proposed, and did!
- it’s not natural. (Story of Scott Christian Fellowship)
- it’s beyond natural.
Can you fake this attitude? [Not for long. You will do what by nature you are]
Explain the concept of going the second mile! Is there a difference between doing what you must do, with or without grumbling, and doing more that you must?
Do you pray for those who spitefully use you, or against them?
Are you treated fairly? Are you treating fairly? Which do you have control of?
