Review of Week 46:
COMMITTED: We really need to move from interest to commitment - to God.
NEW LIFE: The old must pass away. God gives new life.
CHRIST’S LIFE: The life of faith is Christ is living in us, presenting us holy and blameless, beyond reproach.
SUCCESS: God sends us. God grants success. We worship.
OUR STORY: It’s our story that we live with Christ. Follow Him.
EVERY DAY FAITH: The spectacular is interesting, but we need to be committed to every day faith.
SIMPLY OBEY: every single act of obedience draws us closer to God.

Nov. 18 - FREEDOM
John 8:36 “...So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed...”
Context:
- Jesus claims to be the light of the world.
- Jesus claims to be from above.
- Jesus claims to always do what pleases the Father.
- Jesus claims that true disciples abide in His word.
- True disciples know the truth, and the truth sets them free.
- If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.
What is the opposite of freedom? [bondage]
What types of bondage keep people from being free? [sin, habits, addictions]
Why do we accept our bondage?
- we don’t see the potential God has placed in us.
- we don’t really believe God cares enough about us to liberate us.
How is a person set free from sin? [by being crucified with Christ]
How is a person freed to be all God intends? [by the resurrected life of Christ]
How does the world’s idea of freedom differ from God’s?
- freedom from responsibility leads to anarchy.
- freedom from the corruption of this world leads to something entirely different.
Do we want the freedom Christ offers or the freedom the world promotes?
Do we prefer the “knowns” of our bondage over the “unknowns” of Christ’s freedom? [remember the Israelites wanting to go back to Egypt]
Why do people love darkness? [John 3:19 “...because their works are evil...”]

Nov. 19 - SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS, JUDGMENT
John 16:8 “...And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;...”
Context:
- There is danger of falling away.
- Religion will persecute Christ’s disciples because it doesn’t know Christ.
- Jesus must go, and it is an advantage for His followers.
- The helper will come to convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.
What does it mean to be convicted of sin?
- not just a “whoops I shouldn’t have done that”.
- what goes through a person’s mind in our courts of law when they are convicted, when after all the deliberations, they are found guilty.
- realization that the price MUST be paid.
Do we know how much we’ve transgressed in God’s kingdom?
- why is the Holy Spirit making it clear.
- the process increases our belief and understanding of the sacrifice of Christ.
What does it mean to be convicted of righteousness?
- realization of the resurrected, glorified, righteous Son of God.
- the process increases His life in us.
What does it mean to be convicted of judgment?
- realization of the judgment of the ruler of this world.
- the process should move us from friendship with this world and its ruler, to relationship with God.

Nov. 20 - FORGIVENESS
Eph.1:7 “...In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace...”
Context:
- every spiritual blessing is ours in Christ.
- saints “are chosen before the foundation of the world”
- chosen to be holy and blameless.
- predestined for adoption according to His purposes.
What is the ‘pleasant view’ of forgiveness? [God is kind and loving, so he accepts us]
What does this view devalue? [the extreme cost of forgiveness]
How does human forgiveness usually differ from God’s forgiveness?
- does God ever say “that’s okay, we’ll just pretend it never happened”?
- are there consequences for actions that are mandated by God’s holiness?
- did Christ have to take these consequences for forgiveness to become available?
Do we tend to undervalue, or trivialize forgiveness?
How can a proper understanding of the atonement capture our allegiance and propel us through the salvation process?

Nov. 21 - FINISHED WORK
John 17:4 “...I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do...”
Context:
Chapter 16 - Jesus warned His disciples about their upcoming persecution, He promised them the Holy Spirit was coming, and He assured them that He had overcome the world.
Chapter 17 - Jesus’ high priestly prayer.
Eternal life is knowing God, and Jesus Christ.
What is a martyr?
- martyrs willingly die rather than deny that for which they stand.
- martyrs lives are taken from them.
Was Jesus a martyr?
- Jesus gave His life, it wasn’t taken.
Did Jesus accomplish the work that God gave Him to do?
- He came to die for mankind.
- His death was the historical plan of God.
What is our part in accomplishing God’s intentions?
- the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, righteousness, and judgment.
- we repent and are crucified with Christ.
- Christ lives in us and we become coworkers.
Was Christ serious about fulfilling His purpose?
Are we part of God’s historical plan?

Nov. 22 - ORDINARY
1 Corinthians 10:31 “...Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God...”
Context:
v33 clarifies the position we are to take.
- we are not to seek our own advantage.
- we are to seek other’s advantage, that many may be saved.
Life exists in two different categories.
- Profound (big) things.
- Ordinary (little) things.
Which type are important? [both]
Which are ordained by God? [both]
Which make you feel more important?
Which feels more God ordained?
What is a prig? [a person who is bold, impudent, conceited]
What is a spiritual prig? [a person who is proud of his profound importance]
Did God create us for the ‘ordinary’ things of life?
Why are the ordinary things usually a great place to reveal the glory of God to others?
- it’s where we spend most of our life.
- it’s God ordained reality and we can easily reveal His reality in the ordinary.

Nov. 23 - GRACE and MERCY
Psalms 123:3 “...Be gracious to us, O Lord, be gracious to us, For we are greatly filled with contempt...”
Context:
- Looking to the Lord for mercy.
- The world offers plenty of scorn and contempt.
What is the difference between belief in God and faith in God.
- there are a lot more people who say they believe in God than there are people who truly have faith in God.
- faith in God is demonstrated in every day responses to every day situations.
Are we more confident in our human ingenuity or in our God?
How can the cares of the world shift our focus and our attitudes?
- political, job, family situations?
How can the ‘need to be right’ shift our focus and our attitudes?
How do we typically react to the world’s scorn and contempt? [cynical, critical, judgment]
How does a life of faith change these reactions? [mercy and grace]
Why does God give us discernment?
- not so we can criticize.
- so we can intercede.
- so we can care.

Nov. 24 - LEAKAGE
Psalms 123:2 “...Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the Lord our God, Until He is gracious to us...”
When do you become aware of a leak?
- usually not until there’s a big problem.
- even a small leak eventually results in a big problem.
What happens to a balloon that has a slow leak?
- loses volume.
- loses firmness.
- eventually becomes worthless and dangerous.
What is spiritual leakage?
- less walking in the Spirit, more walking in the flesh.
What happens to a Christian with a slow leak?
- stands for less.
- loses firmness.
- eventually becomes worthless and dangerous.
How can leakage be prevented?
- maintain a consistent, healthy relationship with the Almighty.
- quickly repair any areas that lack holiness.
- when the Holy Spirit convicts in a problem areas, repent and strengthen that which remains.

Review of Week 45:
DRAW NEAR: We must take every opportunity to complete transactions with God. We must act across the space between us.
SUFFER: To suffer with Christ is to entrust our souls to a a faithful Creator as we do what is right.
PERSONAL BELIEF: Have we adopted a programmed system of belief, or do we believe in a personal, present Jesus?
HIS PURPOSES: God can redeem our entire existence, using every part for His purposes. Our part is to love Him and answer His call (transact).
PRAYER TEMPLE: Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is interceding for us. We must guard against using the temple for selfish ambitions.
GOD’S POWER: We must be prepared to suffer when we choose God’s power over the wisdom of men.
COWORKER: If we’re not blessing people, promoting truth, and helping with the mission, can we really call ourselves fellow workers?

Nov. 11 - COMMITTED TO OBEY
Gen.22:2 “... He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you..."
Context:
Abraham was told to sacrifice his promised son.
What did he do? He went.
Abraham is described as a man of faith
Heb. 11:8-10 “...By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God...”
Rom. 4:3 “...For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God , and it was credited to him as righteousness..."
Did Abraham do anything wrong? [Ismael?]
Was he better at doing than waiting?
He wasn’t a procrastinator.
What is obedience? [doing what you’re told]
Who does the telling? [God, Satan, Self, Others]
Who told Adam what to do? [God and Eve]
Who did Adam obey?
What is the difference between being interested in obeying and being committed to obeying?
- interested: obey when convenient or when consistent with preferences.
- committed: no excuses, just do.
Why do you think Abraham could pass this test of sacrificing his promised son?
- He knew God’s voice.
- He knew God’s character.
- He had many previous experiences with God.
- He was committed to God.
Are we more committed to self or to God?

Nov. 12 - NEW LIFE
2 Cor.5:17 “...Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come...”
If a man is in Christ, what happens to the old things? [they pass away]
What things need to pass away?
- anything that doesn’t line up with God’s holiness.
- attitudes that aren’t holy.
- actions that aren’t holy.
- thoughts that aren’t holy
Do we have any of these things remaining?
Can we rid ourselves of them?
How is it accomplished? [in Christ]
Are we committed to this, or just interested?
Can God bring this to reality?
Rom. 4:16-17 “...For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (as it is written, "A father of many nations have I made you") in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist...”

Nov. 13 - CHRIST’S LIFE
Gal.2:20 “...I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me...”
Context:
- There is a freedom available in Christ Jesus.
- There is bondage that occurs in religious attempts to be righteous.
- There is hypocrisy that rears its ugly head where the two coexist.
- No one is justified by works of the law.
What are “hole and corner” experiences with Jesus?
- little tidbits of exposure.
- maybe an experience of “touching the hem of His garment”.
    - a compartmentalized subset of our lives.
What is the gospel good news?
Colossians 1:21-23 “...And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach - if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister...”
- humanity is alienated, hostile, and evil.
- Jesus atoning work liberates humanity.
- the goal is to present humanity holy and blameless, beyond reproach.
What is our part?
- live in faith, established and steadfast, not moved from the hope of the gospel.
Do we live our lives, or does Christ live in us?
Do we believe in the love and sacrifice of Jesus?
Are we living by faith in, and devotion to, Jesus?
Are His goals being reached in and through us?

Nov. 14 - SUCCESS
Gen.24:27 “...He said, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, the Lord has guided me in the way to the house of my master's brothers..."
Context:
- Abraham is getting up in years.
- He doesn’t want Isaac to marry a Canaanite.
- He sends his servant back to Mesopotamia to find a wife for Isaac.
- The servant asks the Lord for success.
- The Lord provides Rebekah.
- The servant worships the Lord.
- “...the Lord has guided me in the way..”
Did the servant ask for guidance?
- not really.
- he asked the Lord to grant him success and then spelled out how it should occur.
Did the servant have hutspa? Yiddish word is Chutzpah, meaning audacity or nerve.
- he was not on his own mission.
- he was on a mission for his God fearing master.
Can we expect success in our endeavors?
- are they our endeavors or His?
- do we love Him? Are we called according to His purposes?
What did the servant do when success was granted? [he worshiped]
Do we expect to see God in every detail?
Why is it better to be devoted to God than to be consistent in our convictions?
- devotion to principles can actually prevent us from proceeding with God.
- we become proud of our commitment and fail to worship the Living God.

Nov. 15 - OUR STORY
John 21:21-22 “...So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?" Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!.."
Context:
- Jesus has been crucified and buried.
- Jesus has risen from the grave.
- Peter and several disciples are fishing, catching nothing.
- Jesus, whom they don’t recognize, intervenes and they end up with more fish than they can handle.
- Jesus feeds them breakfast.
- Jesus questions Peter 3 times about his love for Him.
- Jesus gives Peter a hint about his upcoming martyrdom.
- Peter wants to know about someone else’s life story.
What was Jesus’ response to Peter’s questions about another disciple’s future?
- what is that to you.
- you follow Me.
How do we over evaluate others’ lives?
- someone is suffering, we want to evaluate and/or step in.
- someone is sinning, we want to evaluate and/or step in.
What are the results of overstepping?
- interfering with what God is doing.
- failure to follow where God is leading us.
How does maturity move us from conscious behavior to unconscious response?
- the more Christ lives through us, the less we consciously calculate our behavior and responses.

Nov. 16 - EVERY DAY FAITH
1 Cor.10:31 “...Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God...”
Was the Incarnation a spectacular event? What followed? [Jesus childhood]
Was the Transfiguration a spectacular event? What followed? [demons in the valley]
Was the Resurrection a spectacular event? What followed?
- breakfast at the beach.
- almost 2000 years of life on this planet.
Which do we prefer, the spectacular or everyday life?
Where will we spend the vast majority of our life?
Will we prove faithful in the every day affairs of life?
How do people elevate “success” above faithfulness?
How does this detract from God’s intentions for our life?
What is the difference between the spiritual and the spectacular?

Nov. 17 - SIMPLY OBEY
Gen. 22:16-17 “...and said, "By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies...”
Context:
- Abraham was given the promised son.
- God asked Abraham to sacrifice His son.
- Abraham obeyed God, and God offered a substitute sacrifice.
Did Abraham understand what God asked him to do?
- v8 he told Isaac God would provide the lamb.
- v10 he wasn’t looking for another when he took the knife to slaughter his son.
- Abraham, over time, had learned the concept of absolute obedience.
What should we do when Jesus says “come”?
What should we do when Jesus says “let go” or “get rid of _____”?
What should we do when Jesus says “trust”?
How do we get to a place of understanding God?
- by obedience.
- every single act of obedience puts us in position to better relate to God.

Review of Week 44:
DEATH and LIFE: We are justified by His atoning death, and we shall be saved by His resurrection life.
FORMED: Salvation is the process of Christ being formed in us (Gal. 4:19 )
REAL FAITH: When we move from talking to walking, we move from faith ideals to REAL FAITH.
TRIED FAITH: We must be built up in faith that is REAL and TRIED
PURCHASED: We were bought with a price. We need to care less about ourselves and more about the kingdom.
LOVE and KEEP: As our love of God increases, keeping commandments becomes an increasingly natural and simple way of life.
DEAD and ALIVE: Are we fully identified with the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ?

Nov. 4 - DRAW NEAR
James 4:8 “...Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded...”
Context:
v1 - quarrels and fights come from passion.
v2 - desires lead to inappropriate behavior.
v3 - friendship with the world’s way of doing things is enmity with God.
v6 - God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
v7 - the devil should be resisted.
v8 - draw near to God.
v12 - He is the lawgiver and judge.
Ex. 3:1-4 contains the burning bush incident while Moses was in Midian.
- Moses saw a burning bush.
- He drew near.
- God spoke to him.
What should we do when we are exposed to a truth from God?
- observing from a distance leaves us unchanged.
- moving closer leads to interaction with God.
Transact
- action across the space between you and God.
- moving from our place in this world to position ourselves before God.
What happens when we execute this transaction?
- the pull of the world and Satan’s lies become less of a problem.
- the truth becomes clearer and imprinted upon our character.
Are we taking every opportunity to draw near?

Nov. 5 - SUFFER
1 Peter 4:13 “...but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation...”
Context:
v1 - Christ suffered in the flesh. We’re to think the same way.
v2 - we’re not to live from human passions.
v3,4 - when we don’t join in the world’s sensuality and partying, we will be maligned.
v5,6 - the gospel is preached to get people from flesh to Spirit.
v7-10 - we’re to be self controlled, sober, loving, hospitable, good stewards.
v12 - we shouldn’t be surprised by testing trials.
v17 - judgment begins at the household of God.
Why are we to embrace trials?
- we’re sharing in Christ’s sufferings.
v19 “...those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right...”
Is all suffering the same?
- can suffer for doing wrong (murder, theft, etc.)
- can suffer for doing good.
How does avoiding suffering “short circuit” the will of God?
What happens through suffering?
- stamping out of personal ambitions.
- destruction of individual determinations.
- preparation for greater use.

Nov. 6 - PERSONAL BELIEF
John 11:26 “...and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?..."
Context:
- Lazarus was ill.
- Mary and Martha sent for Jesus.
- Jesus waits two days to respond.
- Lazarus dies.
- By the time Jesus gets to Bethany, Lazarus has been dead four days.
- John 11:23 “...Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again..."
Does Martha believe the words of Jesus?
- she believes within her program of belief.
- she believes Lazarus will rise on the last day.
Does Martha understand what Jesus is saying?
- she’s focused on future events. Jesus is working in the now.
What was the sisters’ “ordeal of doubt”?
- they had programmed belief.
- things didn’t go as planned.
- Jesus didn’t handle the situation the way they thought it should be handled.
What did Jesus do?
- He handled the situation in His way, raising Lazarus now, and glorifying God.
What is the difference between programmed belief and personal belief? [a “system of belief” misses the personal nature of a living God who reigns and interacts with humanity every day]

Nov. 7 - HIS PURPOSES
Romans 8:28 “...And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose...”
Context:
v1-3 - we have to put to death the deeds of the body if we are to truly live.
v17 - we’re heirs with Christ, providing we suffer with Him.
v20,21 - creation has been subjected to futility, but will be freed from its bondage.
v23 - likewise, we groan inwardly, waiting.
v25 - we hope for what we do not see.
v26 - we have difficulty in prayer.
v28 God is working all things together for good.
For whom is God working?
- those who love Him and are called according to His purposes.
Is there a part of your life that you wish never happened?
Is there currently something in your life from which you want to escape?
Are you having difficulty in prayer over certain circumstances?
Are these part of the all things that God works together for good?
Does God know what He’s doing?
Do we trust Him?
Can God redeem your entire existence and use every part of it for His purposes?
What is our part? [love Him and answer the call to His purposes]

Nov. 8 - PRAYER TEMPLE
Rom.8:26,27 “...In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God...”
Do we know how to pray?
How does the Spirit help us?
Can we pray without words?
Can our spirit, with the Holy Spirit, interact in the spiritual dimension without our words?
When and how does this happen?
Can our words interfere with the deeper groanings?
Why did Jesus cast the moneychangers out of the temple?
- Matt.21:13 “...And He said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer'; but you are making it a robbers' den..."
- the house of prayer was being used for selfish ends.
Where is the temple of the Holy Spirit?
- 1 Cor.6:19 “...Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?...”
- is the temple being used for selfish ends?
Are we guarding the temple?

Nov. 9 - GOD’S POWER
Col.1:24 “...Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions...”
Did Christ suffer?
Why did Christ suffer?
- theologically: He took the penalty for all the sin of mankind.
- practically: Religious people didn’t like His message.
What is the difference between preaching the historic facts about Jesus and preaching the effects of redemption?
- historic facts: God’s reality, God’s intentions, God’s plan [God centered].
- effects of redemption: man’s reality, man’s preferences [man centered].
Was there anything lacking in Christ’s afflictions?
- no, He finished the work.
- yes, the enemies of God’s truth have not had their fill of persecuting Christ in believers.
How can personality get in the way of preaching the gospel truth?
- 1 Cor. 1:17 “...For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void...”
- 1 Cor. 2:4,5 “...and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God...”
- being attracted to a personality is not the same as being attracted to God.
- there is a major difference between the wisdom of man and the power of God.
Are we looking for God’s powerful life, or simply a wise presentation?
We must be prepared to suffer when we choose God’s power over the wisdom of men.

Nov. 10 - COWORKER
1 Thes.3:2 “...and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you as to your faith,...”
Do we consider ourselves coworkers? Fellow workers in the gospel of Christ?
Do we have ambitions or agendas that differ from God’s?
Does God expect every believer to be on the mission field?
What is the mission field?
What is the mission?
Where are laborers needed?
Which scenario best describes our Christian life?
- We’re looking for the blessings of God, the truth of the universe, and the peace that passes understanding.
- We’re blessing others, exposing lies, and helping others find the peace that passes understanding.
Are we fellow workers?
Should we be?
