Coming of Age:
Luke 2:49 "...And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?...”
Context:
- Parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.
- They went up according to the custom when Jesus was twelve.
- They left without realizing Jesus wasn't with them.
- After three days, they found Him in the temple with the teachers, amazing everyone with His understanding and answers.
How much do we expect out of twelve year olds?
At 12, Jewish boys received intense instruction in anticipation of reaching 13, the age of responsibility when they became a man.
Bar Mitzvah translates to "son who is subject to the law" (Bat is daughter)
Do our seventh graders have a lot of understanding and answers?
There was a time when an eighth grade education was the norm.
When do kids reach the age of accountability? What factors encourage or prevent the development of responsibility?
What did Jesus know at the age of twelve?
- the literal Greek translation for Luke 2:49 is "I must be in the of my Father", which doesn't specify a place or activity.
- Jesus knew His heavenly Father.
- Jesus knew truth.
- Jesus knew His place.

Baptism:
Matthew 3:15 "...But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness...”
Context:
- John the Baptist was preaching repentance and baptizing those who confessed their sins.
- He challenged the Pharisees that trees that don't bear fruit consistent with repentance are cut down and burned.
- He proclaimed that Jesus would be baptizing with the Holy Spirit and fire, gathering wheat and burning chaff.
- Then Jesus insisted upon being baptized by John.
Why was it necessary for Jesus to be baptized?
- He hadn't sinned.
- He was fulfilling the Father's will.
- it was fitting to fulfill all righteousness.
What did He mean when He said "to fulfill all righteousness"?
- the law didn't have any reference to baptism.
- John was pointing to the Messiah via repentance and baptism.
- Jesus identified Himself with this process.
Was Jesus circumcised?
Luke 2:21 "...And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb..."
Matthew 5:17 "...Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them..."
What two things happened immediately following His baptism? (Matthew 3:16,17 Mark 1:10,11 Luke 3:22 John 1:32)
- the Holy Spirit descended on Him.
- the Father voiced His love and pleasure.
- a revelation of the Trinity occurred at the beginning of Jesus ministry.
- the fullness of the Trinity was involved in launching the ministry of Jesus on planet earth.
In His ministry, we will find the truth about sin, righteousness, and judgment.

Temptation:
Matthew 4:1 "...Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil..."
Why would the Spirit lead into the wilderness to be tempted?
- Did God lead the Israelites into the wilderness where they were tempted?
- How did they do?
- How did Jesus do?
Does the Spirit lead us into temptation?
- Matthew 6:13 "...And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil..."
- James 1:13-14 "...Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust..."
What is temptation?
- offer to meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way.

Temptation 1
Context:
- Jesus had fasted for 40 days and nights.
- The tempter said "IF you are the Son of God", turn these stones into bread.
Matthew 4:4 "...But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ...”
Luke 4:4 "...And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’... ”
Are we most tempted following highs ("...in whom I am well pleased...") or following lows ("...He then became hungry...")?
- Peter was praised for properly identifying Jesus as the Messiah and almost immediately turned right around and set his mind on the things of man instead of the things of God (Matthew 16:13-23)
How does a knowledge of, and focusing on, the Word of God help during temptation?
- the IF be a distraction, turning the focus on us instead of the Word.
Why is EVERY word important?
- a word wrongly applied is exactly the strategy of the devil. It can lead to death.
- every word is needed for life.

Temptation 2
Context:
- the devil tempted Christ to throw himself down from the pinnacle, that angels might bear Him up.
Matthew 4:7 "...Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ...”
Luke 4:12 "...And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test....”
What is the underlying perversion with which the devil was attempting to entice Jesus?
- testing God's ability to save, rather than trusting while obeying.
Can you think of any examples of this in our day?
- snake handlers, claiming the protection which Paul had.
- any promise claimed without surrender to His greater purposes.

Temptation 3
Context:
- the devil offered all the kingdoms of this world.
- the cost? devil worship.
Matthew 4:10 "...Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’...”
Luke 4:8 "...And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’...”
Were the kingdoms of this world Satan's to give?
Luke 4:6 "...and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will..."
Daniel 4:32 Nebuchadnezzar "...shall be driven from among men, ... until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.”
Psalms 8:4-6 "...what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,..."
What are the two things Jesus said were for God only?
- worship: What alternatives have been offered for worship?
- service: What alternatives exist for service?
Is it possible to worship ONLY God? To serve ONLY God? Are people who are committed to this viewed as radical?

Red Letter Study:
Luke 6:46-47 "...Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? "Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:..."
Context:
- Jesus describes the difference between building on rock and building on sand.
- Building on rock requires hearing His words, and acting on them.
- Building on rock is the only way to withstand the storms of life.
Biblical History:
ADAM: Mankind in approximately 4000 BC
- created by God.
- given purpose (tend the garden, be fruitful and multiply).
- chose an alternative offered by Satan.
ABRAHAM: Nation started in approximately 2000 BC
- created by God.
- given purpose (all the nations will be blessed).
- the nation chose alternatives offered by Satan.
JESUS: New Testament Church is born
- son of God.
- given purpose (speak the truth, release the captives, blood sacrifice).
- rejected all alternatives offered by Satan.
YOU: Part of the Body of Christ in 2013
- created by God.
- given purpose (tend, be fruitful, bless, reconcile)
- will you choose alternatives offered by Satan?
Why did Jesus come?
- Jesus gives many reasons, but all are based upon 'doing the will of the Father'.
How many Gospels?
- there are four Gospel accounts in the Bible, but only one true Gospel.
Why four Gospel accounts?
- Jesus came for all people.
- People tend to fall into one of four basic people groups.
- Each Gospel account has the flavor of a people group:
Matthew: Religious people, Jews.
Mark: Doers, Romans.
Luke: Thinkers, Greeks.
John: The masses, everybody else.
Did Jesus come to liberate people from the bondage that each group exhibits?
Does it matter in 2013 what Jesus said almost 2000 years ago? Why?
Are we independent of His-story, or are we a part of it?
- Do we know our place?
- Are we willing to take our place?
Why is a Red Letter study important?
- We must hear the words of Jesus.
- We must do the words of Jesus.
Format of this study:
- study all four Gospel accounts simultaneously, using the Gospel harmony outline found at http://www.blueletterbible.org/study/harmony/index.cfm
- use a Red Letter edition of the English Standard Version of the Bible.
Are we willing to listen to the words of Jesus?
Are we willing to respond to the words of Jesus?
Prepare to meet your Lord.

FOLLOWING - choose your leader wisely.
There are many places in the world that freedom doesn't seem to exist. Even in the United States, once the beacon of freedom, there is a steady erosion of freedoms. But ultimately we all have the freedom to choose who or what we follow.
There is a very long list of things not to follow; the customs of the nation, your own heart, other gods, our own plans, man's command, Satan, sensuality.
Leviticus 20:22-23 "...You are therefore to keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them, so that the land to which I am bringing you to live will not spew you out. 'Moreover, you shall not follow the customs of the nation which I will drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them..."
Numbers 15:39 "...It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot,..."
Deuteronomy 6:14 "...You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you,..."
Jeremiah 18:12 "...But they will say, 'It's hopeless! For we are going to follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart..."
Hosea 5:11 "...Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, Because he was determined to follow man's command..."
1 Timothy 5:15 "...for some have already turned aside to follow Satan..."
2 Peter 2:2 "...Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;..."
There's a very short list of who we should follow.
Deuteronomy 13:4 "...You shall follow the Lord your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him..."
Matthew 4:19 "...And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men..."
Matthew 10:38 "...And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me..."
Matthew 16:24 "...Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me..."
Matthew 19:21 "...Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me..."
John 10:4 "...When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice..."
John 12:26 "...If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him..."
1 Peter 2:21 "...For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,..."
The choice is ours to make.
Joshua 24:15 "...If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord..."
Walking with Jesus requires a commitment to follow.

RUNNING - to move through life without the restrictions of sin and heaviness.
Hebrews 12:1-3 "...Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart..."
What are weights?
- heavy things we're carrying.
What is clinging sin?
- the personal offense against God that just seems to hang on.
- the issue that just seems to linger, even as many other issues are successfully crucified with Christ.
What is required to run the race that is set before us?
- lay aside weights and sin.
- persevere.
- look to Jesus.
What perspective should the great cloud of witnesses offer us?
- chapter 11 of Hebrews is the faith chapter.
- the witnesses demonstrated an assurance of things hoped for even when things weren't seen.
- the race has been run by many before us.
- we won't have to face things that haven't been faced before.
1 Corinthians 9:26-27 "...Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified..."
- is there more than randomness in our running?
- does it take any effort on our part?
Philippians 2:14-16 "...Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain..."
- are we running in ideal situations?
- are we running with the right attitude and demeanor?
- what value does the word of life offer while we run?
Are we willing to do our part?
- will we lay aside the weights?
- will we confess and confront clinging sin?
- will we keep our eyes on Jesus?
- will we persevere?
- will we live disciplined focused lives?
- will we hold fast the word of life?
- will we grumble and dispute?
