The Fringe and Laughable - touching Jesus
Context:
- Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, falls at Jesus' feet, imploring Him to lay hands on his 12 year old daughter, who is at the point of death.
- The crowd was pressing around Him.
- In the crowd was a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years.
- She had suffered much under many physicians, spending all that she had (a health care crisis 2000 years ago).
- She was only getting worse, but had heard of Jesus, and was sure that touching Him was the answer to her problems.
- She managed to touch the fringe of His garment, probably one of the 4 tassels which men wore to remind them to obey God's commands and to be Holy.
Mark 5:30 "...And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?...”
Luke 8:45,46 "...And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me....”
Matthew 9:22 "...Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well..."
Mark 5:34 "...And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease....”
Luke 8:48 "...And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace...”
Sidebar on current healing remedies: For menstrual blood flow, a woman as to eat a barley grain from the dung of a white mule. If she held it down for one day, her discharge would cease for one day. If she held it down for two days, her discharge would cease for two days. If she held it down for three days, her discharge would cease forever.
Don't be deceived. All currently accepted medical practices have the possibility to be exposed in future generations as less than perfect remedies.
Why did the woman have faith?
- she had heard reports of Jesus.
What were the two components of her healing?
- her faith.
- power flowing from Jesus.
Are both necessary?
Now that the social lower crust has received healing, the story turns to the social upper crust. Word comes from Jairus' house that his daughter is dead.
Mark 5:36 "...But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe...”
Luke 8:50 "...But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well...”
What did they find at the house?
- there were flute players.
- there were people weeping and wailing.
It was customary to hire both flautists and wailing women to assist at funerals.
Matthew 9:24 "...he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him..."
Mark 5:39 "...And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping...”
Luke 8:52 "...And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping...”
Why did they laugh at Jesus?
What happened?
Mark 5:41 "...Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise...”
Luke 8:54 "...But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise...”
Luke 8:55 "...And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat..."
Where was her spirit?
We've now seen the authority of Jesus over nature (wine, storm), over the spiritual realm (demons), over sickness, and over death.

Two Blind Men
Matthew 9:28 “...Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?..."
Matthew 9:29 ”...Then He touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you..."
Context:
- after raising the dead girl, Jesus was followed by 2 blind men.
- they were crying out “Have mercy on us, Son of David”.
- they followed Jesus into the house.
Why were they healed?
1. They had faith that Jesus was able to heal them.
2. They were touched by Jesus.
How does one develop faith?
- Romans 10:17 “...So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ...”
- the blind men believed what they were hearing.
How does one get touched by Jesus?
- by following Him.
- by walking with Him.
Matthew 9:30 “...And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them: "See that no one knows about it..."
- Just as with the leper He healed in 8:4, Jesus asked for silence.
Why would Jesus not want the word spread?
- the message and ministry of Jesus was far more than physical healing.
- people are easily distracted by the spectacular.
Did the blind men obey?
- are we more excited about the blessings than obedience?
- are we easily distracted from the purposes of God?

Healing the Paralytic
Context:
- Jesus was teaching.
- The Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there.
- A paralytic, lying on a bed, is brought to Jesus.
- The house was packed.
- Four men removed the roof tiles and lowered the man to Jesus.
Matthew 9:2 “...Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven..."
Mark 2:5 “...Son, your sins are forgiven..."
Luke 5:20 “...Man, your sins are forgiven you..."
How did the Scribes and Pharisees react to this statement?
- they accuse Jesus of blasphemy.
- they believe He is dishonoring God by claiming to have the right to forgive sins.
Is there a connection between sin and sickness?
- Psalms 103:1-3 “...Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases...”
- passage used by Rabbis to explain the need for forgiveness before healing.
- the Jewish audience in this passage would surmise that the paralysis was a consequence of some sin.
- What would an American audience surmise? Chance event?
Why would Jesus first announce forgiveness rather than just healing the man?
Does Jesus know His statement will create a stir?
1. This is a step beyond God’s power working through Jesus.
2. Now people must process Jesus claim to have God’s authority.
3. This passage marks the beginning of opposition to Jesus.
Matthew 9:4-6 “...But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” - he then said to the paralytic - “Rise, pick up your bed and go home...”
Mark 2:8-11 “...And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” - he said to the paralytic - “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home...”
Luke 5:22-24 “...When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” - he said to the man who was paralyzed - “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home...”
The man was forgiven and healed.
The bystanders were amazed, awed, and afraid and they glorified God.
Does Jesus have authority which reaches beyond your theology and doctrine?
- the Old Testament nation had sacrifices for the forgiveness of sin.
- the New Testament church has the sacrificial lamb for forgiveness of sin.
- which was at work for the paralytic?
Is there now a third criteria for the healing process?
- have faith.
- touch or be touched by Jesus.
- be forgiven.
Has our culture removed any connection between sin and sickness?
Would there be sickness if there was no sin in this world?
Is repentance part of the healing process?
Did the paralytic repent? [scripture doesn’t reveal these details]
Did the paralytic have faith? [was it the friends who had faith?]
When Jesus speaks, all theology and doctrine must bow before Him.

Helping a Leper
Matthew 8:3,4 "...And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them...”
Mark 1:41,44 "...Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean ... and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them...”
Luke 5:13,14 "...And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them...”
Context:
- leprosy was a host of skin diseases that were as destructive at that time as cancer is in our day.
- the priests made the final determination of clean or unclean.
- an unclean person was isolated, required to wear torn clothes, and walked around crying out "unclean".
What did this leper believe?
- that Jesus could make him clean.
What did Jesus do?
- first, He was moved with pity (Mark 1:41).
- second, He touched the untouchable and he was healed immediately. [a new dispensation: OT avoid unclean because it makes you unclean, NT touch the unclean and make it clean]
- third, He gave Him instructions.
Why tell no one?
Why go show to the priest?
     - Jesus was faithful to the requirements of the law.

Storm Stopping
Mark 4:35,39,40 "...On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side ... And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm ... He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?...”
Luke 8:22, 25 "...One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out ... He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?...”
Matthew 8:26 "...And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm..."
Context:
- the disciples are in a boat.
- a great storm is about to swamp the boat.
- Jesus is sleeping.
Whose decision was it to cross the lake? [Jesus]
Will Jesus lead you into dangerous places?
What does He expect of us?
- obedience, courage, and faith.
All three accounts of this storm are followed by an encounter with demon possession.
Do you think the weather gets a bit stormier when you're about to face down a demon or two?
Do we exercise faith when the waters are calm or when a storm is raging?

Demons in Gerasa
Context:
- the disciples weathered the storm (with little faith).
- they now land on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
- they have moved from a Jewish to a Gentile region (Jews wouldn't raise pigs).
- the villages Gadara and Gerasa are in this region, so it is sometimes called the land of the Gadarees (Matthew), but sometimes the land of the Gerasenes (Mark,Luke).
- demon possession has led to fierce and uncontrollable behavior.
- the presence of Jesus changes an unchangeable situation.
- the demons recognize the Son of God and are afraid that their time of torment has come.
Mark 5:8,9 "...For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many...”
Luke 8:30 "...Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him..."
What was his name?
- Legion, many demons.
- Roman legion was 5,400 foot soldiers and 120 horseman.
What did Legion request?
Matthew 8:31 "...And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs...”
Mark 5:10,12 "...And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country ... and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them...”
Luke 8:31,32 "...And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission..."
Do demons know their final destiny? What is it? [the abyss]
What was Jesus response?
Matthew 8:32 "...And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters..."
What then happened?
- they went into the pigs (about 2 thousand Mark 5:13).
- they went down the steep bank and drowned in the waters.
How did the herdsmen respond?
- fled and told both city and country what happened.
How did the townspeople respond?
- they came and saw the man clothed and in his right mind.
- they were afraid. Why?
- they asked, no begged, Jesus to leave. Why?
Why are people more willing to live in their current torment than to move forward, following Jesus?
How did the one delivered respond?
- he wanted to go with Jesus, but Jesus would not allow it.
Mark 5:19 "...And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you...”
Luke 8:39 “...Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him..."
When is it wrong to follow the supernatural movement of God on the earth?
- when God wants us proclaiming His goodness elsewhere.
Rabbinical literature cites four characteristics of madness:
1. Running about at night.
2. Staying overnight in burial places.
3. Tearing apart one's clothes.
4. Destroying what one has been given.
Is there any madness in our society?
Is there any demon possession?

Calling Disciples - Part 2
Luke 5:4 "...And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch...”
Context:
- Jesus hops in Simon's boat.
- turns a bad fishing night into a net breaking catch.
Luke 5:10 "...and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men...”
Matthew 4:19 "...And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men...”
Mark 1:17 "...And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men...”
Why were the fisherman so willing to change professions?
- Andrew had already answered the challenge of John the Baptist.
- They were evidently looking for life beyond what they currently knew.
What does following Jesus cost you?
Who is willing to pay the cost?
- people who are looking for life beyond what they currently know.

Second Sign in Cana - nobleman's son
John 4:48 “...Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe...”
John 4:50 "...Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live...”
John 4:53 "...The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household..."
Context:
- back in Galilee where He'd turned the water into wine (40 miles from Sychar to Cana).
- official asks Him to come heal his son, who was at the point of death.
- the official was from Capernaum, about 15 miles northeast of Cana (6-8 hrs by foot).
- if the official left at daybreak (6:00), he would get to Cana around noon or one, which is the 6th or 7th hour.
- he evidently didn't go all the way back that same day, because he met his servants the next day.
What did the servants tell him?
- the fever left at the seventh hour.
Did the official get his sign and wonder?
What was the result?
John 4:53 "...And he himself believed, and all his household..."
Are signs and wonders a convincing way to realize that Jesus is Lord?
Do you have to see signs and wonders to believe?
Is Jesus willing to provide what you need to believe in Him.
Is Jesus willing to provide what you need to NOT believe in Him.

Healing and Preaching - authority and power
Mark 1:25 "...But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!...”
Luke 4:35 "...But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm..."
Context:
- Jesus was teaching n the synagogue in Capernaum.
- He taught as one who had authority, not like the normal teachers.
- a man has an unclean spirit, which cries out "what have you to do with us Jesus".
- Jesus acts with power, casting out the demon.
- His reputation grows.
How was Jesus different than those to whom people were accustomed?
- not just talk.
- authority and power.
We've had water turned into wine.
We've had a fever healed from 15 miles away.
Now we have an unclean spirit cast out. (akathartos: unclean, vs. ponêros: evil)
Do you believe in unclean spirits?
What was the significance of being unclean in O.T. times? (state of separation)
Who did Jesus heal as His reputation grew, according to Luke 4:38-41?
- Simon's mother-in-law, and ALL the sick that were brought to Him.

Moving On - lots to do
Luke 4:43 "...but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose...”
Mark 1:38 "...And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out...”
Context:
- Jesus was teaching.
- Luke 4:40-41 "...he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. And demons also came out of many..."
What did the people want (Luke 4:42)? [to keep Him around] Why?
Why did Jesus move on?
** He was sent to preach the good news of the kingdom of God to others as well.
Do we ever try to keep Jesus for ourselves?

At the Well - living water is available
John 4:7 "...Give Me a drink..."
Context:
- Jesus left Judea for Galilee.
- He became weary from His journey. If the Son of God got weary, is it surprising that we sometimes get weary on our journey?
- He stopped at the Sychar rest area in Samaria, at Jacob's well. (My 1st date with my wife was at Jacob's Well, in Alma).
- His disciples were off buying food.
- He asks a Samaritan woman for a drink.
Why was this unusual?
- Jews had no dealings with Samaritans.
- She was therefore taken by surprise.
John 4:10 "...If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water..."
What was the gift of God?
What was available for the asking?
Why do people miss what is available?
- trapped in their circle of understanding.
- eyes not wide open.
John 4:13-14 "...Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life..."
Was Jesus' explanation clear?
Did the Samaritan woman understand?
- she thought He was talking about natural thirst and water.
- she could only think within her experience.
- Is there reality beyond what we've experienced?
John 4:16-18 "...Go, call your husband and come here ...You have correctly said, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly..."
How did Jesus expand the woman's understanding?
- by operating beyond the natural.
What was her reply?
- still trying to organize her thoughts according to her upbringing.
John 4:21-24 "...Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth..."
What was the problem with her worship? [worshiping what she didn't know]
Are people still guilty of worshiping what they don't know? Why is this a problem?
From where is salvation?
- "...salvation is from the Jews..."
- History has continuity from Adam, through Abraham, to Christ and the Church.
What does the Father want from people?
- true worship.
- worship in spirit and truth.
What does this mean?
- beyond the natural.
John 4:26 "...I who speak to you am He..."
Context:
- the woman is aware that Messiah was coming.
- the woman was expecting answers to all questions when the Messiah came.
Do you think her expectancy had any bearing on Jesus pulling into this rest area?
John 4:32 "...I have food to eat that you do not know about..."
John 4:34-38 "...My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this case the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor..."
Context:
- the Samaritan woman heads off and evangelizes everyone she knows.
- the disciples come back with food and try to get Jesus to eat.
What nourished Jesus?
- doing the will of the Father.
- accomplishing His work.
How does doing God's will strengthen a person?
- positioning on God's purposes is the only safe and secure way forward.
What is the sowing and reaping to which Jesus refers?
- the process of reconciling man to God.
- followers of Jesus are co-laborers in this divine purpose of God at many different levels.

Preaching Repentance - John is decreasing, Jesus is increasing.
Matthew 4:17 "...From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand..."
Mark 1:15 "...The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel..."
Context:
- Christ has come of age.
- Christ has been baptized.
- Christ has faced temptation.
- Christ has gathered a few disciples.
- The message of John the Baptist continues to be the central message.
What does "...the kingdom of God is at hand..." mean?
Why is repentance necessary?
Revelation 3:19 "...Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent..."
2 Corinthians 7:10 "...For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death..."
John 3:3 "...Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God...”
Luke 8:10 "...he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand...’
The Holy Spirit convicts of sin. Godly grief produces repentance. Repentance leads to salvation. Being born again leads to seeing the kingdom of God and all the secrets that are hidden from the unrepentant.
Why do people avoid repentance?

Home Town Proclamation - Fulfillment of prophesy
Luke 4:18, 19, 21 "...The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor ... Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing...”
Context:
- In the synagogue on the Sabbath.
- Reading from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
Was the Spirit upon Jesus? [descended at baptism]
What was Jesus to proclaim?
- good news to the poor.
- liberty to the captives.
- sight to the blind.
- liberty for the oppressed.
- the year of the Lord's favor.
Do you know anybody on this list?
Why did He stop where He stopped in Isaiah?
- Isaiah 61:2 "...to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;..."
- Is the year of the Lord's favor the 1st coming of Christ?
- Is the day of vengeance of our God the 2nd coming of Christ?
** A reason the Jesus came: To fulfill prophesy.

Hometown Rejection - It happens
Luke 4:23-27 "...Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well ... Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian...”
Why aren't prophets accepted in their home towns?
What is the significance of the widow and leper references?
How well were His words received? [they tried to throw Him off a cliff]
