The
Way, the Truth, and the Life:
Context:
- Jesus washes the disciples feet.
- He tells them about the betrayal that is about to take place.
- Now He works on assuring them.
John
14:1 “...Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;
believe also in me...”
Were
there troubling things in the disciples lives?
- They have been informed about the Messiah’s upcoming death.
- They have been informed that they will scatter.
- They are about to face significant changes in their lives.
Are
there troubling things in our lives?
What
did Jesus present as a starting place for facing troubling times?
- Believing in God and believing in Jesus.
How
can this bring peace to troubled hearts?
What
difference does a living God make in our lives?
John
14:2-4 “...In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not
so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And
if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take
you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way
to where I am going...”
Where
was Jesus going?
- To His Father’s house.
What
did Jesus tell them He was going to do?
- To prepare a place.
Do
you think there is room for you in Father’s house?
What
is the end result of Jesus going?
- He will come again to take His disciples to Himself.
- Where Jesus is, His disciples will be.
Do
you know the way to where Jesus was going?
- John 14:5 “...Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?...”
- Thomas said he didn’t know the way.
John
14:6-7 “...Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth,
and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on
you do know him and have seen him...”
Are
there many ways to get to God?
- Jesus plainly said there is but one way.
John
14:9-11 “...Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long,
and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen
the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not
believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words
that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father
who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father
and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works
themselves...”
Why
did Philip ask Jesus to show them the Father?
- He didn’t know Jesus like he thought he did.
- He didn’t know the abiding oneness of the triune God.
What
do you think Jesus meant by ‘... I am in the Father and the
Father is in me...’?
- They dwell together.
Why
should the works of Jesus help belief?
- The works were not human works, they were divine in origin.
- The Kingdom of God was presented to earthbound men.
John
14:12-14 “...Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me
will also do the works that I do; and greater works than
these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be
glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do
it...”
When
a person truly believes, what happens?
- They do greater works than those done by Jesus Himself.
How
are these works performed?
- In Jesus name.
What
do these works accomplish?
- They glorify the Father in the Son.
Does
that mean you can do anything and everything?
- 1 John 5:14-15 “...And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him...”
