Truly the Son of God (John 7-21)

John 7

7 - “...The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil...” Why did the world hate Jesus?

15 - “...The Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this man become learned, having never been educated?.." Education that is well beyond the world’s academia.

18 - “...He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him...” Remember this.

24 - “...Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment...” Is judging okay?

38 - “...He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water..." What does this mean?

32-52 Great confusion about who this Jesus was.

John 8

7 - “...But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her..." Judgment or mercy toward others?

11 - “...She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more..." Sin is not ignored. It matters what we do.

12 - “...Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life..." Do we walk in darkness or light?

29 - “...And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him..." Good idea?

31,32 - True disciples continue in My word’ which leads to knowing, which leads to freedom. From what? [Sin: 8:34]

42-47 God the Father or the devil as father. No neutral ground. Jesus claims the Jewish leaders do the devil’s work.

John 9

1-12 Man blind from birth receives sight ”...that the works of God might be displayed in him...”

13-34 Religious leaders get hung up on the things most foundational to their ‘system’. In this case, they can’t see the glory because of extreme focus on sabbath rules.

39 - Jesus brings sight, and takes away sight.

John 10

8,9 - “... All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture...” All? Will be saved vs are saved!

16 - “...I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd...” Beware of exclusivity! One shepherd with one flock from many different sheep.

27,28 - “...My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand...”

John 11

1-16 Jesus tarries as Lazarus dies, setting up another ‘God gets the glory’ situation.

40 - “...Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?...” God can reverse decay - it’s never too late.

48 - “...If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation..." With what were the chief priests and Pharisees concerned? [our place and our nation]. And with what are we concerned?

53 - “...So from that day on they planned together to kill Him...” Improper concern leads to plotting against God.

John 12

4-6 Religious words spouted by a common thief.

10 - “...But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also;...” Unbelievably dark and perverted.

19 - “...So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him..." Does zealous religion still get upset when people prefer Christ?

25 - “...He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal...” What does this look like?

44-46 Belief leads to light, leads to no more stumbling around.

John 13

1-20 Foot washing. Jesus makes people clean. Disciples ought to do the same thing.

21-30 Satan enters Judas.

34 - “...A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another...” Why? 35 - “...By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another..."

John 14

6 - “...Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me...”

12 - “...Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father...” Expectation?

15 - “...If you love Me, you will keep My commandments...” Expectations?

16-31 Promised Holy Spirit will teach all things.

- keeping commandments indicates love and leads to seeing.

- love/keep leads to abiding presence.

John 15

1-17 Abiding. Only way to accomplish anything. Bearing fruit proves discipleship.

John 16

1-4 Does following Christ still put one at odds with religious establishments?

8 - “...And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;...”

13 - “...But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come...”

22-24 Is your joy full, or taken away?

33 - “...These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world..." Which is prominent in our lives?

John 17

3 - “...This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent...”

15-18 “...I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world...” Protected from the evil being, set apart by God’s truth, in the world.

20-26 Jesus prays for the unity of future believers. Us?

John 18

12-24 Jesus questioned about His disciples and His teaching.

25-27 Peter’s denial.

28-37 Jesus before Pilate, claims that His kingdom is not of this world.

John 19

Jesus handed over for crucifixion. Prophesy fulfilled. Placed in the tomb.

John 20

The empty tomb. The risen Lord. Behind locked doors.

22 - “...And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit...”

31 - “...but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name...”

John 21

Appears to disciples.

Restoration and commissioning of Peter.
