Why do oppressed people not hear the good news?

E6:9 “...So Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on account of their despondency and cruel bondage...”

When would they start listening? How faithful would they be?

How confident was Moses that Pharaoh would listen?

E6:12 “...But Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am unskilled in speech?...”

On what was Moses focusing that caused his doubt?

Why did God bring the plagues?

E7:3,5 “...I will harden Pharaoh's heart that I may multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt ...The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord...”

E9:14 "...For this time I will send all My plagues on you and your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth...”

E9:16 "...But, indeed, for this reason I have allowed you to remain, in order to show you My power and in order to proclaim My name through all the earth...”

That ALL might know there is a God in heaven.

What were the ten plagues?

E7:19-21 “...water ... turned to blood through all the land of Egypt...”

E8:2-6 “...frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt...”

E8:16-17 “...gnats on man and beast...through all the land of Egypt...”

It took several plagues before the magicians (the clever) we’re convinced that E8:19 “...This is the finger of God...”

E8:21-24 “great swarms of flies ...in all the land of Egypt...”

E9:3-6 “...all the livestock of Egypt died...” [livestock in the field]

E9:9-11 “...boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians...”

E9:18-25 “...hail struck all ... in the field through all the land of Egypt...”

After 7 plagues, the servants were convinced. Ex.10:7 “...Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God..."

E10:4-15 “...the locusts came...they ate every plant ...and all the fruit...”

E10:21-23 “...thick darkness in all the land of Egypt...”

E11:5 “...all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die...”

How does a hardened heart relate to God?

It wants what it wants, maneuvering God to achieve its preferences, but always remains in control.

Ezekiel 11:19 "...And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,...”

God’s restoration promise gets to the root problem.

Short of this, a person’s life is destroyed.

Does God make a distinction between people of the world and people of the Kingdom?

E12 The Passover Lamb

How was the institution of Passover about blood not race?

Ex.12:2,11,13,14 “...This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you ...it is the Lord's Passover ...when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you ...celebrate it as a permanent ordinance...”

Firstborn Egyptians in a home with the blood were spared.

Firstborn Israelites not in a home with the blood were destroyed.

What is the distinction that God makes today?

The blood of Jesus spares. Without the blood, destruction.

Was the calendar recalibrated, based on the Passover?

This happened in the seventh month of the civil year, which became the first month in Israel’s religious calendar.

The month of Abib - “fresh young ears” (of barley)

When did the calendar change again?

Following the spotless passover lamb of God shedding blood, taking upon Himself the punishment for mankind’s sin. (BC/AD)

How many of the tribe of Israel went to Egypt?

G46:27 “... All the persons ... who came into Egypt were seventy...”

How many left Egypt?

Ex.12:36-38 “...and the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have their request. Thus they plundered the Egyptians. Now the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children. A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock...” [At least 2 million]

What is the significance of Firstfruits?

E13:12 “...you shall devote to the LORD the first offspring of every womb, and the first offspring of every beast that you own; the males belong to the LORD...”

Who set up the Red Sea event? Why?

Ex.14:1-4 “...Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea. "For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, 'They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.' "Thus I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." And they did so...”

This wasn’t a random event where they had to beg God to intervene. [neither are our events]

Who else needed to know “that I am the Lord”?

Ex.14:31 “...When Israel saw the great power which the Lord had used against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in His servant Moses...”

Is this the typical human response cycle?

E14:10 “...As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel looked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD...”

Fear of circumstances!

E14:14 “...The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent..."

Assurance from the Lord!

E15:7 “...in the greatness of Your excellence You overthrow those who rise up against You...” Celebration of success!

E15:22,24 “...they went three days in the wilderness and found no water... So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?...” Failure to remember!

What is man’s part? What is God’s part?

E15:26 “...If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the Lord, am your healer..." (Jehovah Rapha)

How many people grumbled because they assumed they would die of hunger?

How did God test His people regarding Sabbath rest?

On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily...”

Is grumbling against leaders really grumbling against God?

E16:8 “...Your grumblings are not against us but against the Lord..."

In spite of the grumbling, the Grace of God supplied daily bread

E16:16-20 “... the Lord has commanded, ‘Gather of it every man as much as he should eat; ... he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; ...Let no man leave any of it until morning.” But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul;...”

Do we trust for Daily provisions? Do we end up with “wormy and foul” hoarded provisions?

What were people told to do on the seventh day?

E16:23 “...This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD...”

E16:29 “...Understand that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day He will give you two days’ worth of bread...”

Observance of Sabbath even before the 10 commandments were given.

Thunder comes from heaven.

John 12:27,28,29 “...Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. "Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to Him..."

Ex.20:18,20 “...All the people perceived the thunder and ... they trembled and stood at a distance...” “...Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin...."

How does God speak? Do we hear? Is it just thunder to our ears?

Who’s the possession and who’s the possessor? Do you think you can fit God into a hole in your life to make everything okay? What about purpose, direction, and marching orders?

Acts 7:39 “...Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but repudiated him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt...”

Noah rain (Gen.7:17), Embalming Jacob (Gen.50:3), Moses on mountain (Ex.24:18), Replacement tablets (Ex.34:28), Spying promised land (Num.13:25), Goliath taunted Israel (1Sam.17:16), Ezekiel on his right side (Ez.4:6), Jesus’ wilderness fast (Matt.4:2), Jesus’ appearances after resurrection (Acts 1:3)

Some say it deals with judgment or testing, that it’s the number of “probation” or “trial.”

A Jewish Rabbi would say the number 40 represents transition or change; the concept of renewal; a new beginning. The number 40 has the power to lift a spiritual state.

Does God want to dwell among us?

Put the ark on a cart and Uzzah died (2 Samuel 6).
