Life in the Spirit (Rom.14-2.Cor.4)

Romans 14

1 - Accept people who are weak in faith without judgment.

9-12 Christ is Lord of all

13-23 The way to process life among people of different convictions.

17 - “...for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit...”

19 - “...So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another...”

Romans 15

More on relationships

1 - “...Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves...”

6 - “...so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ...”

How can we be different but in one accord?

Romans 16

Greetings and warnings.

17 - “...Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them...”

19 - “...For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil...’

1 Cor. 1

9 - “...God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord...”

17 - “...For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void...”

18 - “...For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God...”

22-24 “...For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God...”

1 Cor. 2

5 - “...so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God...” What does this mean? Is this the way we present the good news?

Goes on to describe a wisdom that is not of this age, that is for “...those who are mature...”

12 - “...Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,...”

14 - “...But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised...”

1 Cor. 3

1 - infants in Christ are men of flesh.

3 - sign of flesh is jealousy and strife.

11 - “...For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ...”

13 - “...each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work...”

17 - “...If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are...”

19,20 - “...wisdom of this world is foolishness before God... Reasonings of the wise ...are useless...” What does this mean?

1 Cor. 4

20 - “...For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power...”

1 Cor. 5

Immorality in the body of believers.

2 - arrogance instead of mourning and expulsion.

7 - need for cleaning out to make room for sincerity and truth.

9-13 challenge to keep wickedness out of the group.

1 Cor. 6

7 - “...Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?...”

9,10 - “...Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God...”

12 - “...All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything...”

18 - Flee immorality. Why? 19 - “...Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?...”

1 Cor. 7

5 - Satan will tempt you because of your lack of self control.

8-17 Instructions about marriage and divorce.

19 - “...what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God...”

23 - “...You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men...”

28 - “...if you marry ...you will have trouble in this life...”

35 - “...This I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord...”

1 Cor. 8

1 - “...Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies...”

9 - “...But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak...”

1 Cor. 9

14 - “...So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel...”

22 - “...To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some...”

27 - “...but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified...” Why discipline? Can a person be disqualified?

1 Cor. 10

6-11 Lessons from Israel.

- don’t crave evil things.

- don’t act immorally.

- don’t try the Lord.

- don’t grumble.

13 - God provides the way of escape from temptation.

23 - “...All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify...”

31 - “...Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God...”

1 Cor. 11

1-18 Instructions for worship which include head covering, hair length, and divisions in group.

19 - “...For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you...” What good are factions?

23-34 Instructions for taking the Lord’s supper.

28 - Importance of self examination.

30 - weakness, sickness, and dying related to incorrect assessment.

Why do we throw out the first half of the chapter, then use a portion of the Lord’s Supper text?

1 Cor. 12

Spiritual Gifts

7 - “... But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good...” Why?

8-10 Word of wisdom, Word of knowledge, Faith, Healing, Effecting of miracles, Prophecy, Distinguishing spirits, Tongues, Interpretation of tongues.

How many of these gifts do we expect to see manifested ‘for the common good’

11-27 All together we make up Christ’s body.

28 - “...And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues...”

31 - “...But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way...”

1 Cor. 13

The more excellent way - LOVE.

1 Cor. 14

5 - “...Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying...” Paul’s desire for all?

12 - “...So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church...”

19 - “...however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue...”

22 - Tongues for unbelievers, prophecy for believers.

23-38 Instructions for orderly worship.

39 - “...Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues...”

40 - “...But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner...”

1 Cor. 15

2 - “...by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain...” Saved if you hold fast? ESV actually says “...being saved if you hold fast...”

Resurrection discussion.

26 - last enemy is death.

33 - “...Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals...” Often quoted verse is actually within the resurrection commentary.

42 - from perishable to imperishable.

44 - from natural to spiritual (supernatural may be a better translation than spiritual)

50 - flesh and blood don’t inherit the Kingdom.

52 - dead raised at last trumpet.

1 Cor. 16

13,14 - “...Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love..”

2 Cor. 1

5 - “...For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ...” Both suffering and comfort are a part of the journey.

22 - “...who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge...”

2 Cor. 2

5-10 Discussion about forgiveness.

11 - “...so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes...” How does Satan use unforgiveness to his advantage? [destructiveness of bitterness]

14,15 - “...But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;...” How do we smell?

2 Cor. 3

16-18 “...but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit...”

2 Cor. 4

4 - “...in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God...” Satan still has power to deceive?

7-12 the treasure is in earthly vessels, which have some limitations.

14 - “...knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you...”

16-18 “...Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal...”
